I have a friend that wants a 416 rem mag bolt action .I have owned six myself Winchester model 70 ,remingtonbmodel 700 both the guide rifle and the Kevlar stainless rifle which I liked because it's stainless .I.also had a sako but didn't like it because the scope mounts which I.heard blew off and I. Hated the cheek piece .I bought the sako for $800 is the reason I.bought it..I have shot my Winchester model 79 1600 times no problems except a small sliver of menTal which came off the bolt .The Remington 700s were good except the magazine's which would hardly hold three rounds .I had to get Remington to replace one of the trigger guards because the magazine dumped twice after the new part it worked. The stainless Kevlar stainless model 700 I had to add a bdl floor plate because I hated bolting all four in the gun out of the gun.I.like the 416 Remington Magnum it's my limit as far as big bored to shoot.well .I.have a torn rotator cuff in my right shoulder that I.don't want to make worse .I know alot.if people have 416s on here .I told him to get a Winchester model 70 .

Model 70 Controlled feed Classic. I prefer the Safari Express made in the New Haven plant. If you are concerned about recoil, I can send some load data for the CEB .416 180gr Flatbase Raptor. According to michael458, he couldn't tell any difference between them and 225gr or heavier in their ability to kill water buff in Australia. Nasty little bullet that hits amazingly hard, does tremendous damage and penetrates like crazy. 3000fps is easy to shoot. Mine are loaded to 3300+. I saw those Montana rifle company rifles but have not seen one in.person or heard of anyone having one .I have had the best luck with my Winchester express rifle .Hopefully I can steer him the right way .I have been shooting my 416s 20 years lots of fun and I trusted them on bears in Alaska for 12 years.

If you can find one, Winchester Custom Shop built a number of Special Build Mdl. 70 stainless steel .416Rem rifles around 2000. I have one I ordered with some additional custom features and a friend bought the same rifle. And I believe Michael McCourry also has one of these rifles. They are exceptional. I also owned a Remington Custom Shop built Mdl. 700 .416Rem that was a tack driver, but not as nice as the Winchester. I hunted Africa with both rifles, with much success and no mishaps. I have had a 416 Rem in a 700, a CZ 550 Safari, and a CRF M-70. I still have the CRF M-70 as it is the best. The CZ is larger than it needs to be for a 416 Rem, and the Model 700 is not CRF.

Agreed about the M-70. I have one of the new ones and it fed / ejected very smoothly right out of the box. It was also surprisingly accurate with no rear tuning. I shot too many 3 shot cloverleafs at 100 yds. from the bench for it to be a fluke. Was also easy to find a load that printed Swift A-Frames & Barnes Banded Solids practically on top of each other (all 300 grs.) Only had a local gunsmith adjust the trigger to 3 lbs., no other change. Fairly handy too, for a gun of this caliber.

I am basically a PF fan due to my affliction for long range shooting but my .416 is a Mod 70. Glass bedded, it is plenty accurate. Feeds reliably. Had the trigger worked on as well as the action glass bedded. My recommendation is a Mod 70, and not because I think it is the best overall rifle, but the Safari model is the best overall .416 in its price class.

My M70 fits exactly into the descriptions offered, feeds perfectly, shoots well, sized well for the calibre. I chopped the barrel back to 20" and had it gunkoted. Very good value for money.

You don't have to sacrifice reliability for accuracy, and push feeds are not more accurate than CRFs. The pics are a 338 Edge built on a SS M-70 classic. This isn't a one off, my other Edge was also built on a CRF M-70 and shot pretty much the same. I used to think a Remmy or Savage action made for a more accurate rifle, until I started working with CRF M-70s. In fact, I have achieved much higher levels of accuracy with CRF M-70s than I ever did with Rem 700s, and that applies to both factory rifles and customs.

How did you train the termites to make those nice patterns in your stock? Neat looking stock.

The stock was just a low budget option, a temporary thing. It is the first generation Model 70 Coyote Light stock I got for $100 from CDNN. However, it works so well it's become a keeper.

If time isn't an issue I would look around for a custom mod. 98 Mauser, I see them for sale at 25 cents on the dollar from time to time..otherwise Id go with a mod. 70 control feed rifle..Im adamant about the control feed action on a DG rifle..
