Are my eyes playing tricks on me or are those louvered sides on that bullet?
Are the bearing surfaces between the grooves parallel to bore or is there some forward slope to them?
Is this a new hybrid-driving band design or am I going cockeyed?

Ok! I'm back!

LOA 1.50"

Weight 310 Grains

BC .475 +/-
SD .275 +/-

There are five Caliber diameter parallel bands.

There are four corresponding bore diameter inner bands.

The bands are connected by tangent angled tapers.

Stronger and more stable than a banded design and lower resistance than a grooved design.


The .395" Club will have them in the field this weekend eh guys??

I predict 3000 fps with the .395 Tatanka.
More whomp than a .378 Weatherby, or less whomp at low pressures, all the way down to 400/.395 NE levels.

That looks an awful lot like the 375gr 375 cast bullet I sent the Prof a couple weeks ago. It flies well from 1250fps to 2000fps and out to one-half mile...I shot that bullet at the Quigley Matches this summer. I would love to have it in gascheck form. I think the groove form would be great for crimping in.

AHEM! Will the members of the .395 family please come to order. The following items have occurred today:
- .395 Ruger Max completed by smith and at home.
- Hornady dies have arrived at my home.
- Call from Macifej this evening confirms bullets will be shipped AM Thursday overnight.
- Cases formed, prepped, primed, ready to load.
- Elk trip scheduled to begin Saturday AM.

All members approving said actions and trip to test Macifej's bullet on elk say AYE.

My thoughts precisely on the crimping beauty of that "groove form." I just said the same thing to Macifej.

And I have seen some cast bullets with similar "louvers." Never in brass before.

Any similarity is coincidental since I don't do lead and the Prof hasn't shown or told me about any "louvered" bullets. The idea is pretty common sense really and I'm sure somewhere somehow someone back in the stoneage has done something similar. The detail is waaaaay too fine to print in a casting anyway.

The minor diameter is .375" +/- .00005"

The major diameter is .395" +/- .00005"

they look to be a good design for down range energy with those sleek shark fin driving bands...

....Mac , Your a Late night guy ...It,s almost midnight in Alaska.,., ., Right now today I,m still playing with my old 458 .,.,,with 300 gr moly coated X bullets @ a mild 2550 fps from it,s 19.5" barrel .I toned it down from 2700 fps to save meat ....believe it or not its my deer load .,., but it will also drt a thousand pound brown bear @ 10 feet if it decides to take a deer off my back ..lot of times we make a back pack out of the deers legs and pack them out whole minus guts ...Problem is once you have a buck on your back it,s hard to get it off ...I know a couple guys who have had bears take deer off them .....But they only had girls guns with them ......Thats why I need a rifle that produces 4000 ft lbs of smack with an indestructable expanding ,high BC ,moderate SD,bullet of at least 375 cal.. but prefer 40 cal ...and the Ruger case is ideal ...But realistically it is 2 months away .....It would be more generally fun than a 475 A&M tho ......[next day ] turned it back up ,,wy go slow ...

Hornady .395 Ruger Max dies arrived today. LBT bullet mold arrived yesterday.
I can load ammo for the .395 Ruger Max, I just need the rifle, soon as Max and Brett get finished with the reamer I can get started on that rifle, my third .395.

The .395 Tatanka will do for now.

I have a son graduating with a Computer Engineering degree, math minor, this weekend, and I am proud of that boy. Will have to go to his graduation ceremony at U.K., Lexington, KY this weekend.

Puts a crimp in my bucket busting, but I will gitterdun.

I am going to shoot 5-gallon water buckets laid end to end. About $7 per bucket with O-ring lid.
Pond water is free, tadpoles included.

Wet newsprint is just not interesting. Plain water is more consistent and becomes exponentially harder with velocity increase. It is perfect for stressing soft-nose/HP bullets at high velocity.

Water is too easy on FN solid bullets.
My IWB-"Iron Water Buffalo" (plywood and waterbags) is tough enough and gives a relative scale of penetration. Softs go half as far as FN solids in the IWB.

Wet sand bags are tougher still, and a great bullet stopper to test structural integrity and to give a relative penetration scale that is much more severe than any game animal.

Depth of penetration of softs in 5-gallon Water Buckets (5WB) is similar to depth of penetration of FN solids in Wet Sandbags (WSB).

I have no use for wet newspapers.

I will use as appropriate, these consistent media, sufficient to test anything IMHO:
5WB
IWB
WSB

The idea with the SHark .395/310-gr BTHP is to see if it will start to open up at around 1500 to 1600 fps and keep its petals attached up to about 2400 to 2500 fps and see what it looks like at 2700 to 3000 fps from smacking water at top speed.

That is very hard on a soft point bullet. The GSC .395/340gr HV has proven itself. This time the waters will be SHark-infested.

.395/310-gr SHark Bullet load predictions from
AccuLoad 3.04 for the .395 Ruger Max and the .395 Tatanka, max loads to 62,500 psi with 26" barrel for both:

.395 Ruger Max: 2705 fps (3.367" COL)

.395 Tatanka: 3085 fps (3.750" COL)

Surely an excellent elk, bison, brown bear, lion or cape buffalo load load can be found with either of these.

Homemade dies, are not the best. Redding is not so speedy with the custom die orders. Real accuracy awaits the dies, but the barrel ought to be broken in by then.
