What caliber for a p17 enfield?

Thebear_78What caliber for a p17 enfield?
I just picked up another p17 at a local pawn shop for 150 bucks. Its in pretty decent shape with decent stock, and already converted to 300 H&H. This rifle was just begging to be converted to a big bore. I was thinking either 416 rem or 458 Lott. It will be used mainly for moose and brown bear hunting so either caliber is plenty. I was thinking about going with the lott because I have a several hundred .458 400gr JSP bullets left over from my 45/70 that would make good practice bullets. It looks like either can be loaded for up to 300 yard shots with 350gr bullets in the 2500-2700fps range. I really like what Crusher has done with is "train wreck" rifle and think something like that would be about perfect for this rifle too. Any ideas you guys can give me would be great. Thanks.
I'll post some pics of the donor rifle later.

N E 450 No2On a P17 I would go with a 458 lott.
Take a look at the North Fork 450gr, or the 450gr Swift A Frame, or the 400gr Trophy Bonded Bearclaw for serious work, and as you have said use the Rem 405,s for practice.

p dog shooterIf I did't have a 416 allready I do it in 416 rem mag. Because I have a 416 I do it in 458 lott.
Should be a fun rifle capable of handing anything you want to shoot.

Thebear_78here are a few pictures maybe it will help with any ideas.
About the only thing about this rifle I didn't like was the fact that it had been drilled for some sort of side scope mount.

p dog shooterFor 150 bucks your worried about a few holes

I would put a syt stock and some type of high teck finsh on it and find a good scope mount for it with a 1x5 leupold or better.
Looks like a fun project.

CRUSHERif you are changing cal anyway and like a scout style scope leave the sights in place as is they are cool. have your bbl contoured from a blank and leave about 5 inches of the shank the same size as the reciver ring. so from the breach foreward you have an even cylinder. then you can mount a piece of rail on it with one even cut and full contact with the bbl. also the mount will look right and not hang over the sides of the bbl.this will put more weight between your hands with a 22 in 458 lott would be a nice little rifle. I load barnes 250 gr x fp 45-70 bullets for just fing around and they are fast and low recoil and the 500 gr tsx is a sure bear stopper or eles or brinks trucks.

bear if you have an original stock this makes a comfortable stock I had it on my lott before the synthetic and it is a good project you just cut up an old stock and add the pieces to your original for a cool cheap sporter that works.
I realy am happy with the mpi on 5 of my p17 conversions.

grizz007Sorenson-right?, jeffe has it right major fire power!

Hog KillerGo with your first thought. The Lott will be only a rebarreling job. If the side mount holes realy bother you, plug'em or TIG'em. I would add a recoil lug to the barrel and bed both the action and the second lug.

Thebear_78Well I found a local smith who was willing to do the work but the price was a little more than I had planned. Just to replace the barrel was 175 + 260 for the barrel and if I wanted it blueprinted another 125 and 175 if I wanted a muzzle break. $560 dollars and not even talking about feeding, finishing, or open sights and I was thinking about using NECG band front site and semi adjustable rear sight and either a scout style mount or maybe standard scope setup. Does that sound like a fair price? That was using a douglas barrel.

jeffeossoto me, that is a high price, but I don't know what smithin goes for in alaska ..
hah, though 175 is cheap for a muzzlebreak.... if you wantded ME to do one, and I hate them, 175 wouldn't even get my attention...
300 bucks for installing a barrel and "blueprinting" without feeding? nah, find someone else

Idaho SharpshooterTB78,
I posted here somewhere that I have purchased two 505 Gibbs, one a CZ, and the other an enfield. Both are "pre-owned" and have zero issues with feeding, etc. If you want, you would be welcome to talk to my guy here about doing the barrelling and action work. He will have mine available to take measurements off of. As an option, Jim Wisner has about a six page "how-to" guide for making the 505 modifications to an enfield. I'm sure one could be had from him.
I'm just interested in getting as many Gibbs-based wildcats out there as inexpensively as we can. 475, 505, 550, or the 577 that Boomie came up with.

SnellstromWeld up the holes, take that damn "Polychoke" off the end and keep it as a 300H&H and shoot the hell out of it, thats what I would do if it were mine.
But then again I've been contrary to popular opinion my whole life.
Okay on another note send it out for rebore and make it a "35 H&H Mag", what the hell...........
