Thank you Dr. RIP,

does this data assume regular bullets or GS Custom ezy-slides?

Or maybe I should have said ezy-engravers.

Ack, one would assume I didn't read the post.

Well it's past my bedtime and I shouldn't be posting.

What I'm trying to ask is does the ballistics calculator factor in lower engraving pressure and what I assume is lower COF for the GSC design?

If this is a stupid question I apologize in advance.

John,
Good point. That is why all of these programs are a bit hoakie. They do not allow for the magic of the driving bands.

This AccuLoad III software is the best I have used for agreeing with my real life experience, for non-air-cartridges I have loaded and chronographed.

I just chose the fastest velocity powders to show sample loads. The program generates a bunch of other powder selections, starting and max loads, and will at least be a good place to start and work up, FROM THE STARTING LOADS.

I'll just keep fiddling until the air cartridges become real.

Loading the 1.900" long .395/340-gr GSC SP out to 4.200" COL in the .395 Tatanka should be interesting for 1000-yard targets. thumb

That's 5,200 ft-lb of muzzle energy!....700 ft-lb short of the best the 458 Lott can muster! and about 850 ft-lb more than the 375 H&H.

Is that about what one would like to have for these new fangled armored Cape buffalo?

Interesting.

According to "Doctari", the .400 Tembo, a true 40 caliber on a .404 Jeffery case, (shortened by 110 thous with some changes to the shoulder angle and neck length, ends up with 107 grains water) loaded with a 350 grain Barnes X-bullet takes 82 grains of H 4831 ahead of a Federal 215 magnum primer, to give exactly 2300 fps from a 24 inch barrel. There were some calculations about a 400 grain bullet being driven at about 2250 fps, however I didn't see any follow through work on that.

Long way of saying the .395 Ruger S/B able to match that performance. From a 10 lb rifle, the same calculations for the .400 Tembo show 46 ft-lbs of recoil at 17.6 fps.

A very comfortable to handle rifle/load for African plains and DG, as S/B the .395 Ruger.

... a .395 Tatanka Satterlee Arms Magnum Mauser Stainless-Synthetic

Thank you, oh godfather of the .395 for this essential information! Big Grin
I think, for me, the .395 Ruger will provide enough recoil to keep me happy, and enough energy to keep the animals, well... Wink
Am waiting anxiously for my lefthand Ruger SS in 7mm for conversion.

prof242,
It is a place to hang your tassled mortar board. A load data starting point. Wink

Of course, we could load it shorter and load it longer, and even jack the pressure up a wee bit more to the 65,000 psi max of the .416 Remington Magnum and 270 Winchester et al. Make the barrel no shorter than 23" please.

The .395 Ruger could be outstandingly handy and versatile to the max. All with 340 grainers, which at .395 caliber will do anything a PH could ask for, whether he be Professor Hunter or Professional Hunter. Wink

Gerard is sworn by blood oath to make the bullets for the .395 Family. thumb

RIP,
Oooooh, that hurt! Mortarboards are a taboo with me since having to wear them and the robe once a week at Oxford U...yeah, stodgy as ever.
If you would please, why no shorter than 23"? I was planning on 22". Oh well, why argue over a silly inch. (No comments from the peanut gallery.)
As for Professor Hunter, I like that! Big Grin My students have already heard from me about the .395 caliber. Although, there are a few other professors who look askance at me...and my office.
shocker

prof242,
Be perfectly clear with those young skulls full of mush when introducing the term "Professor Hunter" to the ".395 Lectures" series. No drawing permits for PhD bull nor cow in Colorado ... yet. Wink Please stress the fact that a Professor Hunter is a PH, much the same as a Professional Hunter, only smarter.

Ah so ... bsflag

Harry McGowen says that no orders for .395 barrels have come in except from me.

So prof242 is just piling BS or has he commissioned another barrel maker to produce .395 barrels?
bewildered

We cannot really expect anyone to order imaginary barrels anyway, eh? Tooling is still in the pipeline.

It is really up to me to bring this baby to life with the help of the .395 Family:

Gerard Schultz
Harry McGowen
Dave Manson
Ron Berry (Don Rip)

We shall endeavor to persevere.

This is a course in RIFLE INTRODUCTION PRACTICE, with course designation RIP 395. It is a prerequisite for any Weapons Systems Engineering PhD candidate at all the top rated, prestigious institutions of higher ballistic learning, such as Accurate Reloading School of Engineering and Ballistic Science University, aka ARSE&BS-U.

This is what prof242 would have us believe? BS r us? bewildered

To AR forum members,
For those of you who might have seen my last post (since deleted) in reply to RIP's comments, I apologize. I often advise that a soft reply is best. This I did not do. I think that RIP also misunderstood my BS, MS, PHD joke referred to me, not to anyone else. I intend to call McGowen Barrels first thing in the morning to find out if my check has arrived as yet. If not, another will be mailed special delivery. It hurts when my veracity is called into question. That is my only excuse (as poor as it is) for this blunder on my part. Frowner

Spoke to the barrel maker just a little bit ago. I was the second this morning. Seems the tooling isn't in yet for the .395s. Am on the way to the post office for a money order and mailing it to McGowen's. Am calling the bank to cancel earlier check.

Boomstick,
Thanks for your kind words. My order is in.
Now as far as the .395 B.S. or the .395 American, which would you rather have? I can go either way (ooh, another opening for the peanut gallery [pun intended]). I have an '06 action, a std mag action, and a Rem 700 mag action which would handle GS's cartridge. You pick yours and I'll pick mine. Although the .395 BS should rightfully belong to you!

i think the ruger case should come first...and by the looks of things it seems you will get there before me soooooo...

maybe ask don ron and start a poll on what shuld be a priority...there is going to be the lapua and imp h+h case so maybe the 06 for more diversity since there will be only 10 grains of capacity between the ruger ang h+h bewildered

either way, i am good. if some pledges come in for the group project we could do both at the same time...i am only 150 bucks away from ordering the barrel...

prof242,
I ask your forgiveness. Sometimes the Don has to play rough. You survived the test. You are the first Made Man of the 395 Family.

Each made man has his own racket, his choice, just has to be .395 caliber. The Don is starting with .395 Tatanka and working upward through the posted list.

Rome wasn't built in a day. First things first, second things second: barrels and bullets.

We need to get 395 pinky rings for 395 Family members.

cheers

Don,
No hard feelings. Guess we both need a little 18 year old Scot... uh, scotch, 18 yr old scotch.
Saw in Midway's catalog some .395 and .399 paper-patch cast bullets (you have to do the patching) from 330gr to 400gr. May do for practice rounds. Am thinking of buying a bullet swage to take .401 bullets down to .395 for lighter game and practice.
.395 pinky rings? Elephant hair bracelets with the head of our new cartridges woven into them! Nah, pinky rings it is.
cheers

Prof242,
.395 cast bullets at Midway! Wheeeeel doggies! Gotta have some! Thanks for the headsup.

Headstamped gold pinky ring for every .395 shooter to wear to the .395 Rendezvous each year in Vegas or Reno?

This could be bigger than SCI and DSC combined. Wink

BTW, my father-in-law (of Scottish heritage) used to call me "Don... er ... Ron" when I first started dating his daughter 34 years ago. Don Ron is an old nickname of mine. Scotch. Even Cutty Sark will do.cheers

Page 415 of the large Midway catalog is where to go. Its Montana Precision on the right side of the page. If necessary, there are some cannularing (sp?)tools that would allow lubing the bullets, or tumbling with moly.
Have looked into a swaging tip die for already formed bullets and it looks like $160, unless someone knows of a less expensive way. .401 bullets would be the largest able to be squeezed down. Seems that .005-.006 is as far as you can go without core/jacket separation.

Great, Boomstick.
As usual, my grandsons, who loooove to get on Grandpa's faster computer, did some searching and came up with an idea. Take .40 caliber cast or thin-jacketed pistol bullets, run them through a custom Lee Lube and Sizer kit ($25+$4 shipping) and get all the practice bullets you want. These are the two who get me to buy .38-55 cast bullets so they can shoot-em-up in my .375 H&H!!
