I am sending the two dummies and these specs to Dave Manson for his verification and transformation into a reamer.

Then Dave Davison at CH4D will make dies from the reamer drawing.

The 9.3x74R is pretty thin at the neck. The max actual OD of the dummy necks is .417" so I am adding .003" to that.

Norma max base spec is .469" but my actual brass is .466", hence the add-on at the neck.

Reamer specs will depend on the reamer maker and I will happily post a reamer drawing here when I get it.

What do you think Max?

Notice I am giving the cartridge a 3.75" COAL and plenty of throat to handle 400-grainers and the freebore will keep pressures lower with "hot loads" in a Ruger No.1. Big Grin

Sounds really decent, Ron, just as long as we don't run into the same problem as Weatherby and Ruger...too long a throat. I've never been much of a fan of freebore, but you probably have more experience in that than I do. Cast bullets don't seem to like much freebore, the velocity not being kind to their surface when forced into the rifling. The straight sided paper-patch bullets can be seated deeper since velocity has to be held down for the soft lead, anyway.

As to the base spec that seems right, I think. It gives .003 for expansion. And the neck will have .0015 per side for expansion. Those dimensions should keep us safe, yet provide longevity for the brass. (Whaddya mean 20 reloadings is more than should be expected Big Grin )?
An RCBS #4 shellholder ought to be the correct size, if I'm not mistaken.

Is it time to order the barrel? Wink

Max,
This is not one of those excessive old Weatherby throats.

I'll be sure to talk to Dave about it before finalized.

I could ask him to make one with no freebore, just a leade and we will really be retro, ready for pistol bullets.

Might make the diameter and length of freebore smaller.

At the rate things are progressing, you have plenty of time to order another barrel from McGowen Precision Barrels, LLC.

Me too. I'd like to have them ship two to Gerard if he ever gets the import papers squared away.

Ron,
Glad to hear about the throats. Just was a little concerned since I've had Rugers that were was next to impossible to get near the lands for setting OAL. You do what you think will be best with the reamer. I'll defer to your judgement. NOW, could we have a classic single shot shoot like the double rifle group? Maybe they would adopt us as their poor relation who can only afford one barrel?

Prof242,

since you two have 100% dimensional control, why not just have Dave show you his 40-90-3 1/4" reamer specs and work from that? Those numbers will be for a .406-.410" bullet, but it is rather easy to dial down the taper, or leave it and provide for a cylindrical area at the mouth of 1.25-1.5 calibers long.

Option B: I have a 38-90 Shiloh Sharps, which uses the 9,3x74R brass...which was the 38-90-217 wcf about 1889. Dave re-created the 38-90 (almost) for a DR for Africa. He used a modern bore, a true .375". Dave cut the reamer set for him. We've talked about it several times. That is what I am shooting, and CH4D calls it the 9,5x74R. As he puts it "...any idiot with a dremel tool can turn that 9,3 into a 9,5 in ten seconds. His 9,5x74R could easily grow .020" in neck OD for your case. Want to go metric? Why not call it the 9,9x74R and have the dremel tool turn that 9,3 into a 9,9?

Problem solved: the 9,9x74R?

Really appreciate your thought and research, IS, but the nostalgia of using a real, old, cartridge has a lot to do with this, too. Otherwise, we'd jut have another wildcat. Yah gotta realize too thet us'uns are gittin a bang out of res-Erections!

Rich,
Appreciate the historical input.
Our land diameter is 9.83mm, our bullet and groove diameter is 10.03mm. 9.9mm is twixt the two, and "9.8 or 9.9 dremmeling" just won't fit the convention.

10.03x76R is what we are after. We cannot go off on a tangent other than to allow it to be called a 400 NE. 3-inch. BTW, if I am a 3-inch, then Ray Atkinson is a 1.5-inch bullrider. holycow

You acknowledge the Germans did the 9.5x74R long before Dave Davison at CH4D did Wink and the Americans had the 40-90 Sharps "Everlasting" in 1885 (Straight 3.25") with a 370-grain .403" bullet paper patched up to .411" or whatever. Thanks for reminding us of that.

I am a bit crazy about this .395-caliber 400 Nitro Express "Aboriginal." Max too. We cannot be reasoned with.

Right Max?

Never fear, I will tighten up the throat of the 400 Nitro Express reamer.

BTW, I now have a tracking number for the .395 Ruger Max reamer, and will go track it. thumb

Indubitoubly, Old Chap. And now that I have ascertained a flow of brass from Hornady this forenoon, we must abstain from unprecipitous persuasions by those not so wellbred as ourselves. By the by, have not found any British caps in blaze orange as yet. Ta Ta

MAX, I hereby donate any brass from Rich to you for purposes of making a dummy 400 NE cartridge to mail to boomstick.

Since it was boomie's inquiries about "whatever happened to the 400 Nitro Express," that never was, that inspired this latest foolery, that we are enjoying so much, how about gifting him with a dummy, please? You are the PR Man with the .395 Shot Glasses, and the B-Max Bullet Master, afterall. Wink

Slightly off-topic, but Boomie had a great idea for raising the money that he's been costing me on these new gun ideas. Taking an idea from Charles Schulz, he suggests a Lucy-stype psychology stand for me, here on AR. I could charge the same five-cents and make a mint considering how many could use a little help... and the few who could use a lot of help! Roll Eyes
clap hammering

Since voluntary walk in's are rare this venture might work better if people pay you to give help to others. Person "A" thinks person "B" is a psycho a-hole so person "A" pm's you and "donates" money for person "B"'s psychiatric help. You pm person "B" and sort him out. Watch out for pm's from Prof242 Wink

Get your gun and hunting anxieties fixed today!
Although I think you can make enough to fill many gunsafes with the finest double rifles settling pre paid disputes here on AR...

The Dr. Phil of AR clap

If people dont get along they have to sit on yor pm couch.

I like the prarie dog... We can put the Psycho-stand in the sig line...but your the Doctor thumb

That cartoon is funny as all get out Big Grin

You could be the "Dear Abby" of the forum.

Instead of Dr. 90210 it's Dr. 242

I say start a thread in Walters forum entitled "Ask the Shrink" Dr. 242 in the house.

I will start...might as well while it is still 5 cents.

Dear Prof242, my wife does not understand my enthusiasm for guns, photography and adventure or anything "testosterone" and is jealous. What should I do?

Max,
Click on "GO" in the header at the top of this forum, go to your "personal zone," select "profile," here at this site, not on your anatomy, then select "edit" your profile, scroll down to the signature block. Insert the .jpg file for the pic between (type that around the file you entered, you can do it manually), click submit, and you are done.
