If worst comes to worst you're just a trip to the smith away from being "Legal". This type of rifle build isn't about being thrifty and a barrel doesn't cost that much anyway (unless it's a fluted octagon with 1/4 rib inlayed in precious metals).

Go with the Gibbs case and do a 577 BME, 550, 510, 505 and 499 Gibbs, 416-408 Chey-Tac!!! 6 barrels one gun!

jeffeossogood god men.. the guy asked a specific question ...
the answers you are providing is what is the most powerfull round in a bolt gun ...
which, if >.500 is the WRONG answer...
dang, this is simple .. and annoying as heck that some folks keep skirting the issue.
Boomy, have you ever TOUCHED a switch barrel gun? man, its ALOT more than "just"

RobgunbuilderThe 470Mbogo is the most powerful sub .50 bolt action cartridge that has been built and used successful by more than n=1 person!. Period! Please dont waste my time with the 475( corrected from 495) A&M as I've chronod one and its way way over-rated. It actually never ceases to amaze me that those with absolutely no real verifyable experience with guns in this caliber range feel they are fully qualified to provide advice to others as if they actually know what they are talking about. Isnt it a better idea to be quiet and ask questions when you really are not qualified to voice opinions? This practice really pisses me off frankly. If you dont own the gun and have shot the cartridge enough to know what it really can do vs googling it,just why should we listen to you? I'm confused! Sorry, I just had to say this!I'm not intending to offend people, just making a point.Fantacising about .475-Gibbs such wildcats is great but put your money where your mouth is and make one, chrono it, hunt with it and then you can prove to us its the best of the best. Till then fantasyland.-Rob

fourboreRob, when you mention the 495 A&M did you mean the 495 a square?
I did a google, sorry, but what a guy to do? It seems that was developed specifically to get around the new .50 ban in CA.
For those who don't know, it is a 460 Weatherby necked up to 495. Apparently, bullets are available? If so; then there should be lots of ways to make a 495 from any current .505 or .510 round. It does not turn me on; but then I dont live in a banned state. Yet!
If more bans do kick in the n=1 could increase fast. And, sadly in that case I image there will be demand for a BIG just under 50 DG ctg.
Does not seem, any 470/475 takes full advantage of the max legal diameter in a banned state.
I had a very bad experience with A-Square ammo in 505, so for that reason alone I hate to even hear the company name. The 495 a2 sounds like an easy reloading scenario.
We are saying there is no other 495 option where n>=2 might apply?
Is it feasible to size down .510 or .505 copper/lead jacketed bullets to 495 in an arbor press? Actually, I wonder the same about sizing down 500NE bullets for the 505 Gibbs, where the diameter is only 5/1000 off.

Hog Killer4 bore, the 495 A2, is only a name, the round uses
.510" bul;lets. Over 50 cal, period.
I am with Rob on this, *&^*%*%^ who post about things they have read and not done, and/or post stuff outside the topic,

jeffeossoGoodness -- being lead astray by marking.
read my lips
the .495 a2 is a .510 bulletthere are .500 bullet, .505, .510 bullets .. ALL of which are outside of this gentleman's request.
the 495 a2 is a .510 .. PLEASE, seriosly, don't attempt to make a fool of an expert.
there is a .483 bullet, made by woodliegh and no one else . that is an irrational choice
the .475 bullet is about the largest <.500 bullet COMMONLY available
rigby brass is plentiful
the 470 mbogo (sure, its a little short, but works FINE) is a combo of the rigby brass and .475 bullet.
It has more capacity and more surface area than the 460 weatherby .. therefore CAN go faster at the same pressures, using the same reloading techniques.
yet another STUPID california gun law...

El DeguelloThe 475 Ackley is pretty powerful. So is the 460 Weatherby...... Are you planning a safari to Jurassic Park??

No you just need to read 1,500 hours of threads on the big bores

There is a lot of proprietary bubba shop talk here

Actually Jay is correct as the ban is defined for the .50BMG cartridge only. A 510 bullet in any other caliber than .50BMG is just fine. In fact any variation on the .50BMG that will not allow a std mil spec .50BMG round to chamber is technically legal to own in Ca. That includes tight necked target rifles. I talked extensively to their DOJ when I lived there. Of course you get to go to jail first then let the lawyers duke it out to the tune of your house. California does have a over .60 caliber law however.-Rob

Man, more confusion! Does Recoil Rob from NY know or trust this? Tends to be with a lot of us (left) east coast states, we simply implement the CA law. For example - diesel emissions. Less thought required. So, this would seem likely scenario for NY. If so; then RR could consider the really cool stuff. After all there is no actual NY ban yet.

RobgunbuilderWhy not just read the friggin laws that apply ON THE FEDERAL and local state level? Talk to the state DOJ or hire a lawyer to figure it out for you if your comprehension skills are that limited.? Do you really think we dont do our homework and are stupid enough to flaunt the laws? Gimme a break!-Rob

fourboreThis entire thread is based on a line of hypothetical BS on top of more BS. Give ME a break!
And now we got an idea to create a .498 for the ban the DOES NOT EXIST, probably never will, just in case? Give me a 2nd break!
So; no more BS for me. Who is going to build a 585NE on a PH action? Ed still needs a few more up front commits to get the first 5000 rounds of "factory" brass produced.
12 April 2009, 02:58
jeffeossothe 49 caliber was invented to fill this request.. there's no BS about it.. seriously, i have barrle makers, reamer makers, dies makers, and bullet sizers lined up and ready to go

fourboreRobgunbuilder,
if you are still following this thread, could you explain how Calif deal with the then current owners of 50 BMG, 600ok and 600NE guns after the bans? Three questions really. Any grandfathering allowed?
I am starting to think more and more that a NY resident might want to build the biggest and baddest over 50 gun (but not a 50BMG) right now before its too late.
