Noticed that the Zeiss reticle construction is "Etched" not "Wire."
It did not take much etching for the reticle above, eh?
I find that reticle just a little disconcerting without a lower vertical post of some sort guiding my eye like a rifle barrel.

No wire reticle to break though. Just a glass one. Big Grin

Another Zeiss etched reticle looks better to me, on same scope with different reticle, same price:

If form follows function then this is the prettiest, bestest-loaded-for-weight Mother Of All Mothers: It is the MOAM, not a trashy MILF. Big Grin

I'd like to see one of these on a 500 Bateleur M98 Mauser.

The new features on the Z6 2nd Generation non-illuminated and illuminated riflescopes include more prominent ribbing on the power ring for easier magnification adjustment and they now come equipped with SWAROCLEAN non-stick coating on the lenses makes it easier to clean away dirt and tree resin. The higher magnification models feature the 3rd turret parallax that can be "locked in" but easily changed by feel. The illuminated models also feature a redesigned, slimmer illumination housing, the overall weight of the scope has been reduced. The day/night control has been redesigned to prevent accidental shut off/on. The Z6i 2nd Generation models also come equipped with SWAROLIGHT which features an auto shut off/on if rifle is taken out of the shooting position, which prolongs battery life.

Plenty of good scopes posted. I have 2 trijacon 1.25-4X24 with the picket post reticle for my 416Rigby. Love those scopes.

I am one who does not worry if the tube is 30mm. Probably the toughest scopoe I have is a Nightforce NXS 2.5-10X32. If I was limited to 1 scope only on a hunt and no back up it would be this scope above all others.

I do know that anything that is man made can be man broken.

Get one that gives a crystal clear picture one with top optics.I would go to the store when it is dark outside and they will probably let you take it outside and try it.Have three or four models with you and see with which of them you are able to define some object clearer.

That is a very interesting option, almost a "Straight Tube," AND IT WILL FIT on a CZ 550 Magnum without extension-ring machinations, and plenty rugged.

Another NXS Compact scope that would definitely require extension rings on a CZ 550 Magnum.
The ring spacing here is shorter than for a Leupold 2.5X Ultralight:

Since we are considering "Almost Straight Tube" scopes now, as all-arounders on big bores, gotta mention the one that Saeed has had NO problems with on the ".375/404 Jeffery Saeed" since circa 1996.
I think he last zeroed his scopes in 1997, one each on the two .375/404 rifles. No problem since. No adjustments needed after 16 or more month-long, annual expeditions. Really? Wink
Those two scopes have survived Walter, as well as loaner use by guests, the annual shooting contests with all camp staff using them,
and Saeed running all over Africa with no sling, African Carry all the way!

The Leupold website shows this scope on the shelf currently with Standard Duplex and Boone&Crockett reticles.
I have found them on the shelf in the past with Fine-Duplex, Heavy-Duplex, and Mildot reticles as well.
Not offerred with illuminated reticle.

Before I knew of Saeed's exploits with this scope, it was already a favorite of mine.

The most standard version of it is often sold out at Midway USA,
so a lot of other shooters/hunters/riflecranks must like it too, lot of 5-Star reviews there:

"I've been using Leupolds for 40-some years of shooting. This model is by far my favorite hunting scope, combining an ideal magnification range, clarity, weight and toughness for hunting in the mountains."

Yep. Good for hunting anywhere. And it even fits on a CZ 550 Magnum without extension rings!!! dancing

The redesigned Leupold VX-3 Rifle Scope combines years of optical technology into one package to create a rifle scope that will become a favorite of hunters and shooters. The Quantum Optical System with Xtended Twilight lens technology advances beyond index matched lenses by specifically targeting the color spectrum that is most present in those critical final minutes of fading light, allowing you to clearly see targets for longer. The lenses also feature the Diamondcoat 2 lens coating which provides abrasion resistance and are edge-blackened to improve resolution by reducing glare. The precision twin spring erector has cryogenically treated adjustments to provide the utmost precision and 30 percent more holding force to ensure reliability. PD999,
It is on my wish list, but on this side of the pond I can get 5 Leupold VX-3 2.5-8X36mm scopes for that price, and keep some coin. (sigh)

What is the price comparison in London, UK for the Swarovski vs Leupold?

On my side of the pond:

SWAROVSKI Z6i 2nd Generation Extended Eye Relief Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 1-6x 24mm: $2399.00 minimum,
about $2500 to cover all reticle options.

vs.
LEUPOLD VX-3 2.5-8x36mm: $399.99 minimum,
about $500 will cover all reticle options.

In USA: $2500 for one scope vs. $500 for the other, roughly speaking.

I usually get my scopes from MacLeod's of Tain (in Scotland); regarded by many as having fantastic customer service, as well as being the only UK dealer to have been chosen by Swarovski UK to sell their "seconds" (scopes from Austria with very slight blemishes, but with staggering discounts, and with completely full guarantees; true bargain scopes)!

New scope price is approximately £1500 ie similar to US prices:
http://www.rmacleod.co.uk/NEW%...PES%20IN%20STOCK.pdf (7th Sept 2013 pricelist: page 4, midway point)

Second-hand scope prices are here:
http://www.rmacleod.co.uk/CUST...H%20STOCK%20LIST.pdf

Swarovski's full 10 year warranty, and true Extended Eye Relief, means I own a total of 8 of these exact models Big Grin

And I can get even more of the Nikons than the Leupolds.

For plains game $200 gets an Inline Muzzleloader, though the 3-9 power has an objective bell. For a similar price one can get a 75 yard parallax 1.65-5 power Slughunter. For under $300 one gets a straight-tube Monarch. These are all premium scopes. Nikon has set an incredible standard for today's hunting.

For 416Tanzan, and to keep the interesting scope specs on one thread for easy reference:

This one used to retail for $189 before it was discontinued by Nikon. It would be the perfect elephant hunting scope, mounted low on a .458 B&M with sub-20" barrel:

Nikon Buckmaster 1x20 Matte Nikoplex Scope (DISCONTINUED MODEL)

The Nikon Buckmaster 1x20 delivers amazing light transmission and a 20mm exit pupil for bright viewing at dawn, dusk or in poor weather. The Nikoplex reticle provides easy aiming and the low magnification creates a huge field of view. And it is legal in states where zero magnification is required. animal

The Nikon Buckmaster is famous among hunters – you simply won’t find a better combination of critical light transmission, must-have features, and rugged durability. With the Buckmasters riflescope family, there’s a perfect match for every hunter and every hunting style, whether it’s rifle, rimfire or blackpowder.

Long considered the standard hunting reticle, the plex design's heavy outer posts direct the eye toward the finer crosshairs at the reticle center for fast target acquisition.

Features:
Brightvue™ multicoating - Bright, multicoating optics deliver up to 92% light transmission.
Large exit pupils - Improved low light hunting at dawn or dusk, when the game is usually moving.
Quick focus eyepiece - Allows the shooter to instantly bring the reticle into sharp focus.
Waterproof, fogproof, shockproof - Nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed.
Precise, hand-turn 1/4-MOA click adjustments - Positive-click reticle adjustments get you zeroed-in quicker and maintain your setting even with heavy recoil.

Leupold are harder to find in the UK, and the prices for US equipment would be appreciably higher than in the US (usually a GB£ sign is used to replace the US$ value i.e. a 50% mark-up just for shipping across the pond)!

Euro scope prices fluctuate with the Euro€-to-GB£ exchange rate; but on the whole the UK prices are similar to US prices for Euro scopes.

My sister-in-law is Scottish, and explains that the Scottish clan system is very complex, just like their varied whisky types!
They are very protective of their heritage and traditions eg the clan tartan designs are protected under Scottish Law old

The 36mm is actually the diameter of the eyepiece - the main tube is a 30mm tube.

They also do a Magnum Scope with 4.9" of eyerelief and again small eyepiece diameter - but reassuringly expensive - I don't seem though to be able to copy across the pictures - http://www.nickel-ag.com/en/pr...s/scopes/15630.aspx!

Nickel Magnum 1.5-6x30 EDS

The real safari riflescope:

125 mm (4.9 in.) eye relief!
Safari hunters and users of large caliber weapons with heavy recoil need additional safety with long eye relief.
Excellent handling with low mounting height.
Especially low mounting heights have been achieved through a systematic slim-line construction of the Nickel Magnum scope. The small ocular diameter ensures undisturbed repetition action and allows free access for locking and handling the rifle. This applies in particular to repeating rifles with the Mauser 98 System.
The cartridge ejection port is mainly kept free by the special arrangement of the reticle adjustment. This means that you can comfortably load, unload and/or re-load despite a lowmounting scope.

Heym SR20:
I screwed the pooch on that one (Nickel 1-4x25 CX).
Thanks for calling it.
Clears up my amazement.
Objective tube 30mm, objective lens "one inch" then. tu2
But from the picture, the ocular tube diameter is way bigger than 36mm, must be an ocular lens diameter of 36mm?
The Nickel link you posted gives me an "error" message, otherwise blank page.
I will look for the scope ... Nickel Magnum 1.5-6x30 EDS ...

Nickel Magnum 1.5-6x30 EDS

13" long, over 8" of ring space, and 4.9" eye relief, yet only 14.9 ounces. dancing

This one, the ocular tube might actually be 36mm.
I think they booboo-ed spec for ocular tube diameter on the other one (1-4x25 CX).

1-6x30 EDS: Objective tube is 36mm diameter on this one.
So both the objective lens and the ocular lens are 30mm diameter: Very nice balance there, somehow aesthetic. Wink
I wouldn't mind owning one or two or more of these Nickel 1-6x30 EDS scopes. Just money! tu2

Great!
So maybe only about $3200 for a Nickel 1-6x30 EDS nilly instead of 10 Nikon 1-4x20 Monarchs.

Gotta admit the Big Bore Forum is not as active as it used to be.
If not for McCourry Institute of Ballistics, this place would be really big-boring.
Hence the need for a big-boring scope reference thread. Wink

Of course Doc M claims to have broken some of them.
He has a real talent for breaking things. Wink

This guy probably agrees with you also:
Author: Roadkill (verified customer) , Engineer, Soldier, CCW Instructor, Hunter, from Foster City, CA on Dec 14, 2012
Pros: Light, rugged, reticule is easily made out in low light
Cons: No frills, it could be difficult to find caps that fit the lens
Would recommend: yes

I purchased this scope for my CZ-527 7.62x39mm carbine. I intended it for a light, quick handling deer and small game rifle. I specified the German #1 reticule because I felt it matched the character of the rifle. 8 weeks later, the custom scope arrived and it meets my expectations so far. Very light, the bolt throw is not interfered with by the bell of the scope with medium warne rings. The eye relief is perfect for this particular gun.

I picked up a gently used Z6 1-6 EE for a song on another forum and man, does that scope have some clear optics and truly wonderful eye relief! I have it mounted in Talleys on a custom .458 Lott purchased from a forum member here. Makes for my ideal package. Now if I only could have picked one up in illuminated reticle, my unicorn would be complete...

Also check out the Leupold VX-6 1-6. Plenty clear although perhaps a little portly. Great glass too!

I had one of the Nightforce NXS compacts (1-4) mounted on my .375 and that thing is so robust you could pound nails with it! It did look out of place though so it got pulled off and put into a Larue mount on my BCM Recce-style AR. With a zero stop and good drop chart, I figure I'm lethal to about 600 yards out of the 16" barrel. Now back to your originally-scheduled Big Bore discussion...

An excellent non-illuminated scope for the hard-kickers; I have a total of 8 of these exact models!
But regarding the illuminated version of these scopes: I was warned by a couple of my buddies who had these illuminated models on their .458+ rifles, that the electronics eventually get shattered. Common for any illuminated scopes on the big-bores.
The Swarovski guarantee is now 10 years non-quibble mechanical (pretty much the best in class), but it's only 2 years for electronics (average for illuminated scope manufacturers).
So decided to get the 1st Gen of these models, before the respective current 2nd Gen EE models came out, which unfortunately are illuminated-only.
Still, cracking scopes; but expensive! beer

I am using a trijicon 1x4 on my 416 B&M and it did great on buff and elle last year. However for more all-around use I am considering a trijicon 3x9 with a green dot. everyone here extolls low power scopes--except Saeed , who probably has shot more DG than the total of half of us here on AR and who uses a 3x9. just got me thinking - and of course it will be great for leopard.
