Since I did this checkering job myself, my first, a couple of years ago, I have decided not to try to checker a plywood stock again.

I had a couple of small booboos to hide and went ahead and just covered everything with a coat of clear epoxy with a paint brush. Almost buried the checkering, but you can still see the outline of the lightning bolt.

Checkering of a laminate, Ray-Ray told us, should be limited to only half the checkering: all cuts parallel, sort of a grooving of the grip panel areas, eh?

Would you laugh or cry if you saw this gun in Zambia or Tanzania? Botswana?

The obvious advantage of the stock is that it does not much matter what the baggage heavers do to it, and the slightly raised hammer and horns provide a pleasant gripping surface for the familiar hand.

thin the stock out and have a pro do it with the same pattern and finer checkering. while you are at it have it engraved HA! d.o.a.

You are as twisted as I am then!

It is a BBK-02 action, and the rifle weighs 10.75 lbs with express sights, no scope, and balances well in that configuration. The stock is very heavy, being a laminate with a lot of epoxy and steel on it and inside it.

Putting the scope (2.5x Leupold) on it shifts the balance rearward, so then a lighter McMillan stock would balance it and make the weight about the same with scope.

If I get it much lighter than that my whole right arm will go numb when I shoot it.

No, no, no, checkering to your specifications would require some good walnut that I would have to baby about. Think McMillan. However the "HA!/DOA" engraving would be a nice touch.
Notice the backward Dakota rear sight?

Things seem to be a bit slow on the Big Bore Forum right now ...

o.k. just start over with a new stock...do a synthetic and fill the empty shell with epoxy to add weight or do a super hard wood like ebony. sure it will cost but what doesnt?

Be sure and get the heavy fill on the McMillan stock (I think that model only comes that way).

It is optimized for scope use.
