Arrrggghhh-the wait is almost over - PICS !!!

Wayne and Ed of AHR fame told me that my 600 OK should be shipping by Monday. Loaded cartridges, dusted off the Oehler Chrono, still thinking about what type of frangible targets to bring with me to the Catskills for the introductory shots. Still need another tripod (the one I have is for the skyscreens)for the video camera I'll set up for those shots. Question is, should I bring a "spotter" to catch me as I tumble or avoid the embarassment and go it alone? Either way it will be captrued on video for the world to see, admire and laugh at!

Frangible targets:

5-gallon nylon/plastic buckets filled with water and sealed tight with 0-ring lids:
Lay them end-to-end in a trough of two 4x4 timbers held in place on pre-cut deck step hangers.

I am sure the initial buckets will explode in a spectacular manner. Add red food color to the water for red mist effect. Or just use some 1-gallon plastic jugs at 25 yards with red water for plinking fun.

If you do undertake the penetration test on the bucket train, anything producing 3 dead buckets with soft nose bullet or 5 killed buckets with FN solid bullet is outstanding.

Could the 600 Overkill possibly get six buckets with an FN solid?

That would be overkill indeed, and more spectacular hydraulics than with lesser calibers.

Someday we may see what a .666 Teufel can do.

I do understand about impatience. Have been looking for the Ottmar raffle rifle for nearly two months. Has been delayed for final cleanup and photography for the Guild and Gun Digest. Am chomping at the bit some myself.

Was completely speechless! Have never won anything worth more than $5 in my life before that. The fates wanted me to try a small caliber I think. (It's a 6mm Remington.)

Just kidding - the pictures I have seen of your rifle and that of other AHR rifles is a work of art and Ed has said that I will be thrilled with the upgraded wood he has chosen for me.
I'm betting on the other end of the Raquel Welsh.
Now about those videos, I was thinking of setting up the camera to view from right rear quarter to capture my "reaction" as well as that of the target.

Thanks to my ever present assistant - my 7 year old daughter - I now have 100 freshly resized, primed and belled 600 OK cases ready for powder and bullets. nothing better than having your kid share in the things that you find important as well.

~17 days to go 'til shipping. Can't wait to see some photos.

I think I have been bitten by that same bug. I sent my stuff off to be turned into my second dream rifle. (a Rem 30S, 375H&H match to my Lott) I am counting the days already, five weeks and one day, so far! I realy do not expect to see it till sometime this summer, but I am looking forward to getting it.

Got a B-I-G freezer? Then buy a square tub about 16"x24"x12"deep, and some trash compactor bags. Fill the bags, one at a time, with water and dye, put it in the tub, and freeze it. Repeat! About four should do you for the break-in video. Build a frame big enough to hold all four. The first shot, oh yeah, stand the frozen bag with the opening up; should look like a terrorist attack on the Sno-Cone stand at the corner!!

Really looking forward to seeing you in Helena in about seven weeks!

Ed emailed me asking for my dealer's FFL. Says they are pretty close to shipping. Couldn't nail him down to specifics, though.

Would love to have it by the end of next week - off Saturday so could sneak up to Catskills for some fun before my daughter's first softball game. Cross your fingers, toes and eyes for me gang

Actually is wsa invented by Rob Garnick (Robgunbuilder) and is similar to a belted, rebated rimmed 600NE made to function in a bolt-action repeater at higher working pressures. Lots of info in the archives if you want some specifics, but throws a 900gr bullet at 2,200-2,400fps.

Beautiful gun, my rifle's in Ed's hands at AHR right now. He has almost convinced me into rebarreling it to 500 Jeffery now since I was looking at 470 Capstick down the road... Seeing your rifle makes me want to do it now!

Also on penetration, here's a really nice experiment done by 9ThreeFifty on the Nitro Express forum with 375 H&H bullets:

Hey guys the person on the Nitro Express Forum just finished his 375 H&H bullet penetration testing including the 350g Woodleighs. The premium plus bullets like TSX's, Swift A-Frames, North Fork, Speer Trophy Bonded did very well. The 350 Woodleigh Protected Points results were very interesting. Thanks Stu. I went with a 23" barrel and I think it weighed in at 13lbs. I should have it in about a week.

There must be 25-30 of these 600 OK rifles out there at present, either with 550 CZ or GMA actions.

What we need is more guys to hunt buff or ele in Africa with it. Safari Kid seem to be the only one to take it across the pond.

Am going to try out my 585 AHR on buff in australia this year.

Beautiful rifle, looks great.

Add mine to the list of those which will make the trip to Africa. First trip will probably be for boars in Michegan with my dad but Africa is on the schedule for 2010 - Cape Buffalo.

I've just finished testing some real nasty 730 gr monometal bullets for the .600Ok. They let you push the OAL to almost 3.8 inches ( and still feed flawlessly through a CZ or GMA mag) and gain a respectable amount of case capacity. My chrono is toast right now but by my calculations this combo should easily be able to drive these to 2700, maybe 2800 fps.
I shot a boat load of them this weekend and really liked the results. I loaded 165 gr of IMR 7828 over a Fed 215 and quick load says that should do 2200fps at a meer 44KPSI.
I believe the total of .600OK's may be in the 40's now. No one is complaining either! I know I'm not! -Rob

Looking forward to adding these to my initial string of reloads. Now with 900gr Kodiaks (from AHR) and 900gr Barnes Banded Solids both loaded with a variety of powders at a variety of weights from "creampuff" to "cerebral contusion" velocities.

Assembling the necessary equipment for the initial test. If the rifle arrives at my dealer by Friday, I might be able to pick it up early Saturday morning in RI and get back to NJ before my neice's communion (else I will be its first target). Then off to Ellenville, NY for some practice on Sunday. If it doesn't get there by Friday, target practice will have to wait til the following weekend.

Of course after the initial sighting in session

and after the appropriate recovery period

(actually, I have put 100 rounds at a time through the 416 WBY from the bench with no probs) the question will be whether I should mount my new Leupold VX-7 1.5-6x in gray finish or the fixed Leupold 2.5x with matte black finish. Both will be on Talley QR mounts so I guess I can sight-in with both, though I am wondering whether the 6x will ever be needed on the 600 Overkill

What say you 600 OK experts and 600 OK wannabes?
