It's a fine cartridge.

Use the 'Find' button above to search the forums.

For practice ammo that doesn't need a headstamp I would use Hornady Basic brass. It comes out to less than a dollar apiece. It's a very cool round IMO but do not believe the A-Square ballistics charts. Art loaded the Capstick to the gills and was overstating his results a bit.

As much as I like the Capstick a Lott would probably be a better choice. There are many more bullett choices available plus factory rounds if you need them. Properly headstamped brass will be easy to obtain for the Lott. There will also be a lot more load data for the Lott.

Michael,

I actually love this round as .475's go; however, if you are truly serious about a .475, I would first look to the .470 Mbogo...you will get true 2400-2500+ fps ballistics without the overstatement or gill raking.

Check this page out:

Sid if you don't buy it, PM me. Is it a CRF or push feed? I need something to fill the gap between our 375 Weatherby, 416 Rem and 500 Jeffery lol As far as velocities go, if a 458 Lott can get 2300 fps with reasonable pressure, a 470 Capstick using essentially the same case with a bigger bore should do a little better at the same pressure. In any case no one looks down at the 470 NE shootig a 500g bullet at 2150 which would be a sweet low pressure loading for a 470 Capstick.

Regards,

Chuck

word to the wise. .. on all 470 capsticks -- WORK UP FROM MINIMUM LOADS -- some winchesters have VERY shallow groves, and allow for hotter loads than if you have a "Standard" bore/groove..

Gtatz Michael that really is a great deal. I am not positive but I think that was from the custom shop with a MSRP of $3500. If it is not the custom model it is still a bargain.

I don't know why but Mark's has been getting some really nice big bores in lately and selling them cheap. It figures they would come in after I had already bought some new rifles. Just my luck I guess.

It is a round that always interested me greatly, it seems to have it all, other than IMO its overly powful and has too much recoil. I have never felt the need for more power than a 404 or 416 for anything...

I have used the 458 Lott and the 505 Gibbs and also shot buffalo with the 500 Jefferys, all of which did the job about like a 404 btw..

If I were to feel the need for a real bolt action bruser then the 470 Capstick would be my choice I believe..I would load it down to .470 N.E. stats and call it good..The .470 N.E. at 2100 or even 2000 FPS is damn deadly under any conditions on any animal up to Elephant, and they don't come much bigger than that...

Ray,

There is no such thing as "overly powerful" hen dealing with thick-skinned game.

Just how many Cape buffalo have you killed? I don't mean the dead ones you might have shot once your clients have killed them, or the ones that were killed by your clients, or the ones you have seen killed, either in person or video?

Is that realy one of the 1 of 125 limited edition "Big Five" rifles (5 calibers, 125 of each)
from the Custom Shop, with the gold leaf on the floor plate?

Or a one-off Custom Shop build, that would be more expensive.

For only $895?
Even I would have grabbed it for that price.

Caveat emptor: Some Winchester Custom Shop 470 Capsticks had over-sized rifling,
and I had a friend with one of the Big Five 470 Capsticks that was oversized and had boogered lands.

I was going to get a 340 Weatherby from them a few weeks ago and then they put a Sauer 202 on the shelf for $995. I jumped on it and have been very impressed with Sauer quality. I already have people offering $2k for it. I am still scratching my head about their price but I am not complaining. Everything else in the store is very high priced but like you said.....every now and then they offer some great deals.

George,
I lost count some time ago, but last I knew of it was about 53 less than Saeed as I was trying my best to catch up to him but couldn't get it done, and never will. His last count that we played with was nearing 200 and is probably 300 by now, so I'm definately out of the race, got to old. I suspect that is many more that most folks that live on this side of that ocean have shot, but todays PHs, booking agents, safari hunters etc. just don't not have the culling opertunities, or kill out the quotas of the 50s and 60s...

I also would like to know why the buffalo I have seen shot, helped shoot, whatever don't count..I have dug bullets out of them, observed the effects, and tested bullets on dead bulls, are you changing the rules to satisfy your case or what?? but lets keep it civil and state our cases.

Did I say "overly powerful", if so then I stand by that, IMO you don't need more than a 300 gr. bullet at 2300 to 2400 FPS but I do like 40 caliber rifle with a 400 gr. bullet at 2100 or more FPS for no particular reason, and its somewhat about my recoil tolerances..Who told you a caliber can't be too big?, That's an opinnion on your part and on mine, nothing more and nothing less..but I can make as good a case on my part as you can on yours..BTW how many buffalo have you killed? Now doesn't that sound a little trite? I don't really care how many you have killed and why should I. If you want to debate big bores then lets get after it and keep it civil.

For one thing, I believe in recoil recovery as an important issue, I would prefer to have 5 rounds of .375s in my gun, as opposed to 3 in my 505., I can shoot a 9.3, .375, and 40 caliber better than a 505 Gibbs for whatever that is worth, I have found the 9.3x62 and the .375 more than sufficient for anything that walks, so I see the 404 as all anyone needs on the top end, and that still gives you some leeway. Damn few, although many claim otherwise, can shoot the bigger bores as well as the lighter big bores...I feel that if you cannot shoot a rifle of any caliber with the same frame of mind that you shoot a 22 L.R. then your shooting overly powerfull. and thats just for starters.

But to be more direct to your quaestion, I have used the big 45 and 50 caliber on buffalo and Hippo and I saw zero difference in their knock down, or killing effect, or whatever you want to call it. I suppose the only reason for their existence is the comfort they give to some..

The real answer is good bullet placement with properly constructed bullets..

So yes sir, IMO calibers can be "overly powerful" for plainsgame, American game or Dangerous game, but I do not take issue with anyone using them, the constitution guarentees them that.. horse

Ray,

I don't know what's more impressive the shear number or the ability to have been able to do so on the limited budget of a civil servant. Not to mention being able to garner that kind of time off allowing you adequate hunting time to kill so many buff.

You should be very proud of yourself. There are very few men who would be able to arrange their lives in a manner that would allow them to pull that off. You are in a class by yourself, truly on a different level from the norm.

RIP is correct, I have two of those Win M70 Big Five 470 Capsticks. Sam and I slugged the barrels and both are .477 caliber, not .474 as they need to be.

Michael, you stole this one, no doubt about it! One of the issues that you might run into is this, retaining in the magazine. If in fact Winchester Custom Shop built the rifle, then it will NOT retain rounds down as you work the bolt back and to. If someone that knew what they were doing built the gun, then it will. However, that is not a big issue to solve, and there are a few really good folks that can fix that in short order should it be a problem. Brian at SSK Industries finally sorted both of mine out. While the barrels are over sized, they will feed and function now, which they would not when I got them, and the Winchester Custom shop could not sort it out.

One of the issues I always had with .474 caliber was the POOR ASS choice of bullets available for that caliber. Not so anymore, both North Fork and Cutting Edge have a FULL line of proper bullets for .474. At my urging, for my two 475 B&Ms North Fork has Solids and Cup Points in 375 grs and 425 grs, and a very good 425 gr Premium Soft. Cutting Edge has 350/320 BBW#13s for my Super Shorts, and 450/420 BBW#13s for my 475 B&M, and a 500/460 BBW#13 Combination as well. All of these are EXTREMELY SUPERB bullets, with them you can do anything in the world, and beyond if needed! There would be little need to look elsewhere for real and proper bullets. Many of the rest of the 470 bullets are way UNDER SIZED on top of that, the only one I know that really comes in .474 is the Swift A Frame. I have Woodleighs and Barnes that measure from .472 to .4725, they won't even engrave at all in my .477 caliber guns. The Swift does get some engraving on those.

Let us know what you find out about the rifle when you get it in hand!

Surestrike,
In 77 years you can do a lot, especially if you get the breaks..Back then or now one couldn't make a living booking hunts without a pretty darn good job, fortunatly two of my job assignments allowed me to be in Africa and make a lot of contacts and later led me to get into the booking business. I was invited to to hunt while there and did so, and that included Africa and several other countries and I made a lot of connections, and started booking and I could do my bookings in the evenings or on weekends, I began in the 50s and had always booked hunts in Texas and New Mexico on family and friends lands..Its a long and probably interesting story, but it has worked and I have been very fortunate. After my retirement in 1995 or 96, I did some paid hunting and invested some money in expansion, developed new companies to rep for, and it worked out and I went full time, but actually not much changed. During all this time I hunted Africa extensively and got invited to cull hunts back then and it all started with the teaching pf classes regarding screw worm control and later I jumped on an opertunity and had the background to do some LE teaching in RSA, Zimbabwe and I did some work in Tanzania but it was pretty bad there at the time and didn't amount to much.. I have been very fortunate and lucky..I have been approached to write a book and I may or may not, I'm not to interested in that project for now anyway..Mostly today I like to rope with my grandkids. It came from hard work and good breaks.

Talking about biographies above, people have asked why there was never been a biography of Capstick. You know another guy also making very extraordinary claims about what he had shot, ie hundreds of elephant, instead of in this case hundreds of cape buffalo ... a seemingly impossible number ... Wink

But the biography also in that case will also probably never be read as it would also expose all the bullshit! Wink
