The Mighty 585 HE
My 585 HE build is nearing completion. With Ed's barreled Enfield action, an A-Square bolt handle, Timney trigger, NECG sights, and an A-Square pattern synthetic stock from MPI, I'm just about there. Now to Ceracote the metalwork and develop some loads, and she'll be ready for anything that walks. A 577 T-Rex but with available brass. The cartridge shown is a 585 HE with CEB bullet vs the mighty 308.

Jon- Looks great, nice heavy built stock.Great pictures.

That barrel is one of the McGowen heavy profiled ones we have.
The bolt is jeweled, not by me, but Bob Snapp years ago.
Cerakote willmake strong, durable finish. Ed.

He had someone put on and polish bolt handle.

It is out a ways for leverage and easy gripping and I fired

it in a different stock of same hefthere and didn't bother.

I find if you are holding the gun to you super tight, which is

only way with cannons, you don't hit knuckles or fingers.

You hold it tight so that big cushiony pad compresses a little.Ed

Sorry you had to use the MPI...they are a bitch to work with...not the best quality...lots of work to make them nice... I like the Coil check style though...

Ed, I figured with a 585, a Coil-Check design was the way to go.

A truck axle tied to a railroad tie would be more attractive. Other than trying to claim that you wear size 15 shoes what good does this cartridge do?

but i DO wear a size 15!! try finding trail running shoes in 15ee ..

it looks alot like the trex hannible, and its an amazingly powerful cart --- just like the 577BME

Some guys like MPI stocks, some like laminated, some like

walnut, maple, plastic,etc.

As for shape or design I like Coil Checks and full pistol grip ones also

in a non-thumbhole stock. As the more pronounced pistol grip

makes it easier to hold the gun tighter. Same with Hogue stocks.

And if we like a more aggresive grip then to me to be right it needs

to have the bottom line of the stock, behind the grip, down to the bottom

of the grip, like the Coil Check is made. Ed

But folks here who bang the fingers because the hand slides

under recoil do it mostly on open, stylish, slanted grip,

where with the aggressive, vertical, pistol grip the hand

is at right angle to the arm, gets a stronger grip and stays

away from the guard, in our experience..

And about forend grip, yes it is important and most guys need practice

on the forend grip, or they end up in a y-tube video by Saeed.Ed

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the great dave westbrook has rejoined the unwashed masses as self-appointed arbiter of all things here.

The rifle is designed to be functional first, and withstand a tremendous amount of recoil while shooting.

We'd about forgotten what a horse's ass you are, dave.

I like the rifle.

that is true.

I was going to post what you said in your PM, knowing you have the twit on ignore, but then I realized that there may be women and younger folk who might read this...

I will summarize: dave, you are under appreciated here, but considered a very special person.

Interesting placement of the rear sight. Why and how does it affect accuracy? And why not just do a peep? Thanks... interesting rifle.

Russ, Ed mounted the sights. Since the barrel was level with the front receiver ring, it was easy to mount the sight there using existing threaded holes in the bridge. I'll probably put a Ghost Ring on it eventually.

I suspect most of us here have no use for such a rifle, but it seems boorish to bring it up.

Biebs - is there some exception to the over .50 cal rule for the .585 HE?

I think, since it ties, caliber wise to the .577 NE it is covered. You might better ask Ed Hubel, since it is his design.

Jon,
Like the idea of a ghost ring on a big bore rifle!

He can put a peep sight carrier on the ramp that is there.
The V sight slides up and down. And can be slid off,
put on another. I think we found peep sight that can go
on the back bridge also.

As for over 50cal we applied and got a sporting use
exemption from being a DD. All over 50s that are not shotgun
calibers, that guys do now, they just apply to ATF Tech
Branch and get sporting use exemption.

AS for being powerful yes it is, but you load moderate, can shoot
light weight 58cal Minie bullets for deer, hogs, moose,
bear, and target fun, at a fraction of the cost
of heavy jacketed or solid bullets. There are more bullets
and bullet styles to be found for 585 than any other
caliber over 458. We have 5 minies that work, 6 turned ones,
8 jacketed ones, saboted loads, etc. Ed
