My recent contemplation of a 500 Jeffery sent me to the safe and a quick review. There are several bolt-actions there and a few DRs. I don't know that I want another "big bore" bolt gun... But I do love them when they're done... What I realised is that I don't have a Farquharson in there! And as I'm on the .50cal trail for this gun, the 500 nitro seems like a nice addition. Odds are, If I'm going after something that can "scratch me up", I'll reach for a DR. So this new gun will play more of a secondary role as a DG gun and primary role in being a joy to own and shoot. Problem is... I can't seem to see the forest for the trees! Help me out here, please. (My wife is no help whatsoever... ) 500 Jeffery bolt gun that looks like this... or 500 Nitro Farquharson that looks like this...

For me, a double is for DG, a bolt gun is for DG when the double breaks, and a single shot is for the shooting range and deer hunting. So if you already have DG hunting covered with a DR, I vote for a single shot. However, I would go with a .577 NE on a Farq and shoot low velocity lead bullets with XMP5744 powder to minimize brain damage!

I guess part of deciding on a .50 is that it be different. With the CZs available in 505 Gibbs, then there are bound to be even more 50 bolt guns floating around... but when was the last time you saw a top-shelf 500 farquharson? Nice flat surfaces for engraving, case colored beautifully, rust bluing, english walnut... hummm... sounds delicious to me... No doubt most of its shooting will be done with loaded-down cast loads... heck, why not a 600?

I do not think I would consider a 500 Farq "fun" to shoot. Why Not a 450/400 3 1/4" Farq. In a 9 to 9.5 lb Farq it would be fun to shoot, and practicle to hunt with. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Go for the Farquharson! I have one in 450/400 3" and love it, another in 9.3X74 is a sweetheart also, just as much fun to use as the 3 doubles in 9.3. As far as recoil goes, a hot load in the 450/400 is about the limit for controlability if you want to get another off quickly. It's for that reason I now have a Ruger #1 and an Alex Henry in 450/400. To my personal way of thinking, a .500 or .577 soon becomes a "fun gun at the range" only. ~Arctic~ A stranger is a friend we haven't met

Get the Farquharson, it's classic and you do not have one. You could do it in 450 NE #2, and get to use any of the multitude of .458 bullets out there. Load it up or down, 300gr - 500gr, 1200fps - 2150fps. Possums to Pachyderms. No, I don't have a large collection. My description of the series of events was a little "tongue in cheek" - as if there was some reason that I needed another gun. My appreciation in firearms has taken me from collecting a quantity to increasing the quality of a fewer number of guns. I'll round up some pics for you. 500grains - The bolt action would definitely be a best-quality action. I've only suggested the 500 Jeffery as it seems to be a bit more "traditional" than the newer 50s. I've got an old 602 in 375 that would rebarrel nicely into 470 capstick. That would be close enough to a 50, and wouldn't require me putting a whole lot of money into a 602. Jeffe - For the Farquharson... Yes, definitely engraved and case-colored. I was thinking of an appropriate "game scene" pattern from that era. Might even splurge with the cartoon animals of the era.

A single shot will work like a charm on Dangerous game 99% of the time, its that 1% that concerns me, so I would go with the bolt rifle if I intended to hunt Buff, Lion or elephant with it..I don't want the PH pulling my dumb ass out of a pile of s--t....or me having to explain to his wife that I thought the SS would do just fine... This is my "Primary" dangerous game gun. Again, this gun we're discussing is not a "primary" dangerous game rifle.
