Tyler KempMe and my 45-70 finally drew blood!
Finlly got my first deer (

) yesterday afternoon. About 100-125 with my 1895gs, put her down fast. I shot a little high, went through the spine, so I had to finish her off with a shot to the head, but I'll claim that as a bad shot. I forgot I had it sighted in a little bit high, then guess I aimed a little bit high. It was a nice sized doe, with a little buck with her. We can't shoot bucks with less than 4 points on one side in Missouri, so I let him go. I'm going out again this afternoon, this is the first time I've slept in on deer season ever.
No pictures, sorry, didn't have a camera, but I'm taking my dads nice one today so if I get a buck pics will be up. Thanks for reading!

Idaho SharpshooterTyler,
Congratulations. Now that the rifle is "blooded" you need to name it. In norse mythology Thor's hammer was named Mjolnir (myolnir). You might consider that.
Tyler Kemp, the Deer Slayer! We salute you.

Congratulations!!
I still haven't blooded mine, too many rifles, not enough deer tags

Details man! what load did you use? recovered bullets? didja see any sign that the bullet tried to bounce off since the .45-70 can't kill anything?

Bill/OregonTyler: Fine job. Your .45-70 spoke with a voice that's been heard across this land since 1873 -- the voice of authority.
There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t.

Tyler KempI used Winchester 300 grain HPs, no bullet, it went through the spine, dug about a 2 foot long trench in the ground then went somewhere. The shot to the head was actually upper neck, right below the skull, didn't want to mess up the head and look dumb, it exited also, obviously. I didn't see any sign of expansion on either shot, even though they both went through the spine, perfect .458 holes, if nothing else the entrance was a bit larger. We can get unlimited doe tags around here, but my grandpa said if I get a buck I'm done hunting down here.

What I really want to use is Buffalo Bore's 300 grain Speer going at 2300 fps out of a 18.5 inch barrel. I better hold on tight if I get those. No reload manual has a load that goes that fast, it provides a flat trajectory out to 200 yards. I'll have to think of an excellent name for the 45-70, it had less time to get a deer then my 7mm but she did the job. Last year I shot a deer at about 10 yards with the 7mm, and we never found blood or anything, just marks where the deer fell down a hill, then ran into a large amount of brush, presumably to die. I guess maybe the bullet hit bone and didn't exit, but I wasn't happy.

metePlease do not make a magnum out of it !! The Speer may open up a lot more than you want. I gave up the standard factory JHPs because they were too fragile .I went to the Win Partition which is much better.Remember it starts out at a .45 cal hole and many use a hard cast lead bullet that doesn't open much at all.

Hog KillerTyler, congrat's on your first deer. Get some more does, they eat just fine. I have not found a recipe for buck horns yet. Stick with the load you are use to, more velocity is NOT everything. That round has done just fine since 1873.

nordrsetaWell done, Tyler! I had Mjolnir out in the woods this weekend but unlike you I have no venison to show for it. Keep up the good work.

Marlin 1895 45-70 24" barrel
300 grain Sierra ProHunter hollow point seated to 2.525"
Winchester brass, 2.1" trim
CCI 200 primer
55 grains H4198 START 2221 fps 27,600 CUP
60 grains H4198 MAXIMUM 2424 fps 40,000 CUP
Hodgdon #27 and Hodgdon 2006 Annual ManualThe Buffalo Bore 300 grain 45-70 load is unlikely to get 2300 fps out of an 18.5" barrel, as it is reported to get 2350 from a 22" barrel. It is likely it will produce around 2260 fps from an 18.5" barrel.
Congratulations on your deer!

Tyler KempNo buck, although I would really like one. It seems like everyone gets lots of deer, and a buck every year, but I'm pretty much deerless except for one. I'm hoping to make plenty of jerky, and hopefully get some more deer next weekend.

PCThe sierra 300 gr HPFN at 2150 is like a nosler BT out of a 22/250, it kills think skinned stuff very quickly.
