Hello, again I'm bothering to all members of this wonderful forum. Well, I'm going to the point, as I have said on many occasions and I have asked and even a survey I have set my preferences caliber focus on the 416 or the 458 Rigby Lott, but I would like opinions on another cartridge that lately I read quite the 404 Jeffery. What is striking, "Is it pleasant to shoot, how it behaves when it comes to hunt dangerous wildlife?, Is it credible to stop the attack by a buffalo, elephant or similar animals? As I always say, forgive the inconvenience and thank you.

Merry Christmas to all and that 2009 brings you everything that you wish and lots, lots of health.

Oscar.

I don't think you'll find anyone who would say the 404J is a bad choice for ANY DG. However, your options are either a very pricey custom, or the CZ Safari Classic, which is about 2400$

Various 416's and Lott's can be had cheaper and without the time needed for a custom built gun as well.

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

Well, I think that exceeds my budget, because 2400 $ is too much for me, I will go to the 416 or 458 that are 930 € ($ 1297) or € 1015 ($ 1416. The die is cast.

Thanks companion,

Oscar.

If you have access to a good gunsmith, one can build a great 404j for less than $2000. Ideally a M70 in 300RUM would be the donar. New bbl. & iron sights & you are done. I built mine for about that & got a 1/4rib too. Of course, the M70 was still available & my donar rifle was only $500.
It's a great cartrdige. I run 380gr softs @ 2250fps & it's a good killer of large game w/ good shot placement. I have two buffalo now w/ one shot a each. It probably doesn't get any better. The .416Rigby or Rem. would be equally effective though. A 400gr bullet @ 2250-2400fps is pretty decisive.

Hello, good in Spain there is a good dealer in Cordoba, but I do not think we should entrust nothing cheap labor. It all depends on how my budget goes. I hope you enjoy much of its 404 Jeffery and many thanks for your answer.

A greeting and Merry Christmas,

Oscar.

The 404J is my preference over the 416Rig.

Why?
Shot both but found the 404 more pleasant due to less recoil, less weight, less bolt length and more.
This may have been due to the particular rifle or Load but it just felt better to use.
Not to sure if that huge case and extra velocity in a bolt rifle is all that necessary.

Loaded with RL-15 the felt recoil is much less than say 4831. Now don't dispair, if you want to load it up and have it kick your ass, it can do that quite nicely! I like to load mine to Historical velocities 2125-2150. It's been getting the job done for several generations!

Besides, I wanted a bolt rifle to go along with my 450/400 3 inch double! Cool

I'm in love with the 416 but also of the 458 Lott, for his great power to stop, but the 404 Jeffery has a special flavor. If I could, I bought a rifle for every caliber.

Thank you,

Oscar.

If the case is not a sticking point you can do the 425 express or the soon to be 404-375

The 404 is a way cool round IMHO... it ooozes nostalgia.

If a mild recoil 423 bullet is your thing there are options.

I would take a hard look at the 416 Ruger.

The 416-caliber Ruger I think it will be difficult to find in Spain, however, the 458 Lott believe that if marketed.

I think I'll stay with the 458 Lott, for power and economy. Now to save the force, to see if it is Christmas as my wife gives me the "bonus".

I think that if, as caliber as the 416Rigby or the 404 Jeffery are more expensive, also say that it would not be bad option, the 416 RM

Oscar.

A 416 RM would be a good choice too! Do you know what kind of ammo is available to you locally, or through mail order to Spain? If you see the CZ 2009 offering thread a few posts down, there are quite a few new CZ's that are going to be offered. The 416 Rem is one of them, among a few others.

Have you contacted any local gun dealers about whats available to you?

I do not know what availability of ammunition of RM 416 in Spain, I have to talk to the distributors of Remington in my country. But I'm very raising of wanting to buy a 458 Lott, for being a cartridge with great energy and power to stop.

Hunted Zim with it knocked them flat.Hunted water buf and they didn't like it either. But the best thing is that now it has become so popular again you can get good ammo, reloading bits and peices anywhere.Do it clap you will not be sorry in my book BOOM
