What's a "400 Magnum." The relatively new H&H 400, maybe? http://www.gunsamerica.com/910380177/Guns-For-Sale/Gun-...RAVED_400_MAGNUM.htm

If it is a 400 Whelen, there is nothing "magnum" about it. It is simply a necked-up 30-'06. Shoots a 300 grain bullet at about 2250 when loaded heavily. But it's beautiful rifle, that's for sure.

Boomstick is probably right about it being a 400 Whelen, no magnum, but, there is an outside possibility that it may be a 40 Whelen magnum. By coincidence my mail this week included the latest NZ Cartridge Collectors journal which had a wee article they'd got from ECRA #518 re some experimental Whelen Magnums based on 375 H&H brass in the mid 1920s. There was drawings for a 30, 35 & 40 magnums, all on full length cases. The reproduction of the Original Kynoch drawing is a bit blurry but they look to have relatively little body taper & about 15-20 degree shoulders. It doesn't mention if any of these were ever made but just suppose this rifle were one of these. Hmmmm Steve I think ECRA is European Cartridge Research Assn. I'm surprised they're allowed to exist anymore in Europe, must be an underground organisation.
