lee440Man, thats a tough choice, but overall, I would stick with the 375 for versatility, ammo/bullet availability and just the fact that you have to have at least one 375 in your battery when you are an African Hunter, just ain't kosher any other way! Lee.

500grainsDid you buy the .450?
I think that a .450 and .375 (or 9.3) combination is very versatile and more convenient than a .404.

Are you set on a bolt action? If not, then consider the 9.3 X 74R. I have yet to hear anyone complain about that round in a double.
If you are set on a bolt, you may want to think about a 416 Rigby. There are enough PH's using them that ammo would not be an issue if the airlines lose yours.

What? No .375 H&H in your possession? That is the
sine qua non of African hunting.
What you do is always have a .375 H&H with you, anywhere you go. Then you have the freedom to bring along the wildest whatever as a primary, and you have the do it all .375 H&H as a backup.
Do not pass go, do not collect $200, do not buy another rifle until you have a .375 H&H.

boom stickhow about the 400 h+h?
if you would entertain a wildcat/original 400 jeffery...how about the bolt action version of the 450-400??? use the same bullets...
use either 404 or rum brass and reform to a shorter neck version of the 450-400

ozhunterAs much as I like the 404J, an open sighted 450NE and a scoped 375H&H would be a great two rifle African battery IMO.

If you go for the 404 then you will have the same battery (with your 450 N°2) as Ian Nyschens when he was prowling around the bush. Seemed to work for him.

If I had to do it all over I´d probably go with the .404J -very classy act. I´ve had a .375 and, though I shot a lot of game with it it never really grew on me, I find the 9.3x62 to be a perfect match for the .416 Rigby or .404 J.

studdogMike, Ammo availablility and selection 375. no brainer.
"shoot quick but take your time"
Mike, now that we have met we could say that you know me, a real feet on the ground sensible kind of person. My main advice is: don't make a rational decision. Make sure your decision is based on heart, desire, nostalgia, romance and history. It turns out I have a bunch of rifles including: a 9.3 x 62, a .375 H&H, a 416 Rigby and a 404 Jeffery. I don't really know why but I keep pulling the 404 from the safe before I go to the range, second is the 9.3mm. There must be something about a big bore that is comfortable to shoot.

surestrikeSir,
The .375H&H for reality and a .404J for cool factor.
I own both and a .470 as well. And a .458 Lott and....

27 March 2007, 21:05
JOEYBONESSell them both and get a 45-70 . Sorry , I couldn't resist.
Carmello,
You can do better than that. Weak.

I'd rather have a 416 than a 404 Jeffery or the .375 H&H.

I don't have the 450#2, but I have a 404 due from Pac-Nor on Wed to go along with my 375.

jorgeMike: I equate the 404 in the same class (or close to it) as the 450, so I would go for the 375. Besides, one shouldn't be allowed into Africa without showing proof of at least owning a 375! jorge

Well said...
or just shoot 400gr woodliegh PP .458 in your lott, and be done with it
I, personally, have no use for a 404, as I am somewhat immune to nostalgia, and, frankly, there's better choices...
