Wearable pad to protect shoulder?? Login/Join

They removed a section of my sternum and did a muscle flap. So I'm now missing the top 1/3 of my right pectoral. Roll Eyes I still have it just not in the right place. So as I found out from my 243 Eeker I only have skin over the rib cage next to my right shoulder.

I have a magnum past pad (if I can find it) figured wearing it might help. Is there anything new on the market that might be better?

As usual just my $.02

Paul, I can only imagine the pain and discomfort. I wish I had a solution rather than a sympathetic ear, but that's all I got.

Heal well!

I used a flexible ankle weight draped over my shoulder when testing lots of rounds from the bench. Think it weighed fifteen pounds. Not going to help for hunting though.

Got this via a PM

Looks interesting.

450ak. Thanks for reminding me. I have used a home made shot bag the same way. I think I can get the bench shooting covered. Just need to figure out handling a quick shot.

Paul, when I shoot at the range the gun kicks into one or more leather bags filled with 25# of shot. The gun never touches my shoulder, and this would solve your problem at the range.

But, when hunting, I suggest a shoulder mounted PAST recoil pad - which apparently you have - but over the pad I'd have a solid jacket (or two).

You might also consider portions of a plastic medieval-armor type chest shield with the PAST pad outside that.

Yep wear enough body armor and I'd get to look like an NFL QB. rotflmo

I think between pad and or shot bag etc I can deal with the bench. Just wasn't prepared the other day. That shield looks like it is worth a try for the $$.

Beretta, Browning and Bob Allen all have a wearable recoil insert for a shirt or vest. A couple of them are a gel type insert that can be worn under a shirt and it seems like I've seen shooter shirts and vests with a pocket for these inserts. They aren't as massive as the PAST pads but they might be just the ticket for hunting.

"...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." I've use both the fitted and the magnum PAST strap-on recoil shields. Even keep one in my 458 rifle case with the rifle.

BUT Yes - there is something better now;
I picked up an Evo-Shield tee-shirt. These shirts are to be worn usually underneath and they are to fit very tight to work properly. so be careful when choosing the size. I usually wear a large or XL, but ordered a medium Evo-Shield and the tight fit works perfect. It lets the shield form to your shoulder.

Just a thought as I feel your pain as you described.
Possibly a dollar pair of thong shoes from Wally World. Cut the toe strap off one, secure it under your shirt (a sewn-on pocket in which it would fit??) and you would get an extra inch of rubber-like padding.
Good luck on your dove hunt. I can't imagine firing 100's of shot shells with your missing muscle cover.

shocker Sorry I wasn't clear. The past is left over for a dove trip several years ago. I'm hoping to be able to fire a "couple" rounds hunting. Pretty sure dove hunting and sporting clays is a thing of the past.

I think I can handle the bench. Worst case always a lead sled etc.

Probably some combination of more than one. Making sure the butt was on my shoulder today not the chest my AR15 was doable. Smiler

I imagine that you could get pockets sewn into a shooting jacket or shirt for PAST inserts to absorb the recoil. Eventually you'd have to shorten the stock. Good luck!

You can make your own.Find out which types of foam are the ones that absorb energy [they do]shape as you need and sew into a pad.
A friend did this for car seats -that worked very well.
A stiffening plastic piece might be used to spread the forces over a larger area.

A temporary fix might be to get the largest and thickest kickeez recoil pad you can find and screw it on the end of your stock. The larger surface area, the extra weight and the 1.5" thick sorbothane should make a big difference. It will look funny but you can switch back to your fitted recoil pad when ready. Slip some extra weight in the stock while the pad is off and use the past pad or whatever for even more effect. Of course, shooting a reduced load in your hunting ammo could make all this unnecessary.

Nothing will prevent your shoulder from recoil impact or bruising.A rubber recoil pad will prevent a cut or scratch but that is all.I have shot my Lotts with tons of layers on during the extremely cold winter and I get beat just as I do in the summer with just a t-shirt on.

The recoil force remains the same regardless of padding. But padding dissipates some energy by compressing and spreads the remaining energy over a larger area, i.e. lower lbs/sq in.

I will even go as far as saying that the thicker the padding the harder the rifle will hit you. This is because you are creating a larger space between you and the rifle butt. The larger space you create the faster the rifle will be moving before it hits you.

no, george .. but one of your more interesting comments ... that assumption would be based on to very strange concepts.. one, that the stuff if the pad has zero yield, and allows the rifle to travel as if there was nothing there, and two, that the surface area is less, not greater...

so, if a recoil pad has a higher resistance than, oh, AIR, and is the same or larger, then the FELT recoil is less...

but, alas, recoil energy is the same, unless gun weight is increased or load is decreased...

again, this isn't a normal "oh, it kicks too hard" situation...

george, does a steel plated rifle butt hit you SOFTER than a rubber butt pad, with the same OAL?

under your position, above, the steel plate should feel softer... as the rifle isn't "picking up speed"

jeffeoso is correct. Even moving the rifle through space expends energy. The further it has to move, the more energy expended. Don't believe it? Try holding your rifle 1/2" away from your shoulder, then 1", then 2", then 6", then 12", then 24", then 48". Oops, somewhere along the way all the recoil energy gets expended before the rifle reaches the shoulder.

If you put cottom balls, or old socks, or foam rubber, or wet diapers between the rifle and your shoulder the material will also absorb enery, energy that the rifle must expend to move and compress the material. The more wet diapers, the lighter the felt recoil. Magic!

So.....?
  • Using thicker pads will increase felt recoil.
  • For lighter felt recoil use a thinner pad.
  • To achieve the lightest possible felt recoil do not use a pad. Instead, use a steel plate.
