I had a custom leather and lead (shot) pad made-- prior to that I had used this http://ads.midwayusa.com/produ...Ko1coCFZRcfgod0XoC1w

I use two Reactar Gel Pads on top of each other inside mesh pockets I stitched inside my shooting shirt and shooting jacket on rifles and shotguns that are uncomfortable for me. I swap the pads between the clothing, and pull them before they go into the wash. I also have a Reactar harness (it looks like a handgun shoulder holster) that will hold the pads if I am wearing "street" clothes. The harness stays put better than pads in the jacket or shirt as it goes over the t-shirt and under everything else. The shooting arm goes through it so it fits around the shoulder, and then it has elastic clips front and back on the non shooting side to attach onto a belt, belt loops, or trouser top. The gel pads aren't quite as good at recoil reduction as the bulky PAST Mag pad I bought prior to them. I don't use the PAST now though, as it didn't work for me anywhere but at the range. The PAST Mag pad also stiffens up in the cold whereas the gel pads don't seem to. Perhaps the Standard or Field version PAST pads are okay, I am sure someone else here has tried them. I also have used over-sized Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pads fitted via a heavily tapered LOP spacer to the stock on some hard kickers (well, they kick hard to me). Spreading the force over a bigger area of my shoulder made a real difference in how it felt. The stock has the same dimensions up to the butt which is longer and wider. Not exactly pretty, but it works and I can always swap it out for an original pad.

I use one of the Kick Killer leather lace on pads, over whatever pad is already on the gun. At the very butt end is a fairly thick piece of leather that wraps around and actually increases the width, and length of the pad surface, effectively increasing the surface area. It seems to help me, plus having long arms the extra length seems to help with recoil. JJK

I take the Hi Tech route and it seems to have gained a following. Expensive though! Very effective up through 458 Lott. Take a thick terri cloth hand towel and fold it up 4 layers and throw it over your shoulder. Easier to get on and off that a past and works better. VERY HI TECH! (For the bench)! You could probably sew it underneath a large shirt. EZ

I called Evo Shield reently to order a shirt for a friend. They were very helpful. I wouldn't worry about color. I wear mine over my undershirt, with a light short over. The Shooters Shirt pad is quite rigid. It's purpose is to spread the impact over a larger area and reduce the foot pounds per square inch. Maybe this will transfer some of the energy to some muscle tissue in your case. You can wear this in the field! See my PM. As to some of the posters above-Sheesh!

Thanks to all. Had a long discussion with the DR today about the missing muscle. She FEELS and will support the need for a medical guard. They are very similar to the Evoshield Chest protector. Should be molded to cover the missing muscle as well and the Sternum. That way could be used for both shooting and ATVing etc. As I understood it the pad is custom fitted molded like the Evoshield then attached to a tight body shirt. Issue might be does it go far enough to cover the butt plate. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I ALWAYS use a folded thick terry cloth towel between the PAST and my shirt. Works great! Bob www.bigbores.ca "Let every created thing give praise to the LORD, for he issued his command, and they came into being" - King David, Psalm 148 (NLT)

I have tried them all and the EVO shield is the best by far for heavy rifles and high volume shotgun shooting. It molds to your shoulder configuration so you should be able to make it to fit

100% agree. Those who think the PAST pad is better have not used an Evoshield. They are amazing.

Thanks to everyone that has responded and made suggestions. You guys are the best!! The update. The DR had the REP in her office on Wednesday during my appointment. What he showed me sure looked like Evoshield with another name on it. He described how the shield would react with the air and form to my body. He thought their sternum and chest shield would cover the area in question. That if not they had in the past added a second panel(that would be my cost)at the patients expense. He though less than $100. They want to wait a couple months. the muscle flap where it doubles as in enters the sternum continues to Atrophy and the lump gets smaller. They don't want to mold the shield then have a gap behind it. So what will be supplied by ins is a full chest shield. From the picture it sure looks like Evoshield's chest protector. They will go ahead and add the pocket for the second shield. I probably don't want to know what they are charging Medicare and AARP. Unlike Evoshield I have to go to their office and they handle the forming so they can charge more. Once I get it I'll check the size of the pocket and contact Evoshield to see if their recoil panel will fit. The shirt would allow either or both panels. At $24 beats the extra cost for the medical one. Thanks again for your help. Last thought learning to shoot left handed would be my LAST option. As usual just my $.02 Paul K
