Supercharging your WSM rifle to 50 cal

ShortandFatSupercharging your WSM rifle to 50 cal
I know of only 2 working rifles in this calibre, but know very little about it. The case was designed primarily to shoot 750grain 50 cal projectiles at sub sonic speed <1100 fps
Is is infact a 2.1 inch 500 AHR case (jeffery with rigby rim) hold approximately 104.5 grains of water.
It would make a fantastic scrub/woods rifle on a 20 inch barrel shooting 450 to 500 grain 50 cal projectiles.
I'm going to look into it a bit more re the gunsmithing
300wsm, 2.1 500AHR short,
300 WSM, 2.1 500AHR short, 458WM, 416 Rigby, 300RUM

boom stickWhy not do a 500 AR but use flat nose bullets in a short action and reg bullets single loaded...
or better yet sell or swap the wsm for a 500 ar in a std action and have compactness and versatility??? shoot 50bmg's single loaded or stubby ones at low preasure and moderate velocity?
I know...it is more about style than function...I have the wildcat disease bad. Hi I am boomie and I am a cataholic

ShortandFatBoom - whoooooooo

My 458 AR is 3/4 finished, I'm sure the 500 AR will be 2008's project, Jeffe tells me it I should be able to build one on a m77 action as well, but my 300 WSM featherweight looks up at me everytime I open the safe, screaming for a facelift. I didn't know what to do for it but stubbled across this round.
Unlike the AR series I'm sure brass will be harder to get, I was just impressed you could fit so much powder in to such a small case
I think it would be safe to say this is the most you can squeeze out of a short action, without going single shot
I don't know if you can open the action up enough to get it to cycle, but a case full of powder and 450g 50 cal woodleighs, would surely shock the pants off anybody who shoots it
It's just an evil sparkle in the corner of my eye at this stage, it may never happen

fireball168I've got a push feed 70 WSM action that will feed a 1.625" case stuffed with a 650g military ball from the magazine. I was surprised to say the least.
Still trying to figure out brass, would prefer to use 50 Alaskan/348 Winchester brass trimmed and recut to WSM rim size, so I can use my 510/458 SOCOM reamer.

fireball,
What COL with the 650gr? In S&F's circumstances we're also required to have a case length of minimum 2.0" to make it legal to hunt deer.
Cheers...

Boomy,
What would the COL be on a 500AR with FN projectiles?? We have access to Woodleigh's 440gr and 450gr RN ... could always shave the lead RN off to make them a bit shorter. Or maybe run a 500AR reamer in short to give a case length of 2.1"??
Cheers...

tiggertateThis is similar to MartyW's 470 Rhino rounds and looks like it would work fine in an AR-10. Nothing wrong with a semi-auto thumper!
"Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

ConAll the AR platformed 458", 470" and 510" have had case lengths below 2". Has anything appeared at just over 2"???
Or ... put it another way ... what case capacity in H2O is required to push a 535gr at say 2040-2100fps from a 22" barrel?
Cheers...

jeffeossoMartyW, Teppenjitsu, has a 500 phalanx, right? It's a shortened and SEVERLY rebated 500 jeffe, that works in an are, and does NE vels.

just remebbered the 500 ar is 2.65" so with 50 alaskan bullets the oal would be about 3.1ish soooooooo
the std action is best even with 50 alaskan bullets.
