I called Dave Kiff, and he was kind enough to give me a few dimensions on the new .423 Dakota-Lapua:

case length: 2.490"
shoulder diameter: 0.539"
shoulder angle: 32 degrees

That is what he said.

He also noted that there were other new Dakota cartridges he called "DSM's" for "Dakota Short Magnums," not the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV Revised" of psychiatric tabulations.

A .338 DSM?
A .308 DSM?
And a .423 Dakota Lapua.

What a happy new family of cartridges, all with brass made by Lapua with the same head size as the .338 Lapua Magnum.

The .423 Dakota-Lapua retains a lot of body taper. It is not blown out at the shoulder. It has less case capacity than the .404 Jeffery.

What a refreshing new approach. Will Rick Jamison want a piece of the action? animal

Without trying to sound difficult, wouldn't these cartridges be prone to the same feeding problems as the .460 A-Square Shore if tried to fit into "standard" (i.e. .30-06/.338 Win. Mag.) acctions? I recall reading on this forum that the problem with the .460 Short is that there are huge feeding issues if built to standard actions (i.e. something smaller than the RSM or CZ 550, etc.). Isn't the Lapau rim size more or less the same as the Rigby / big Wby. case?

Yes, it boggles the mind!

What new wonder action will Dakota chamber the DSM's in?

Nesika Bay with in-line vertical stack? Single shot?

I didn't get the case lengths of the DSM's but suspect they are closer to 2-1/4 inches instead of 2.5 inches. bewildered

Sumbuddy who know might keep us posted. I don't want to pester Dave Kiff anymore right now, but maybe the Dakota pub or web site will have something soon.thumb
