Does it have an external claw extractor? If not, it is not a pre-64. According to Armscollectors.Com it is not a pre-64:

have you seen the rifle ? if its a pre 64 it would have a CRF long extractor on the bolt, its a flat piece of metel on the right side that runs the length of the bolt body. If its a post 64 the bolt body would be round along its whole length with no flat piece along the side. If you want an example to look at, The new Ruger hawkeye is a CRF with the long extractor. (pre 64 style) And the remingtons 700 is a push feed.(post 64 style)...tj3006 freedom1st

I just recently saw a 1964 model priced at $800 so I don't think you're lowballing the guy, If anything, according to bluebook, you might be a little high.

I bought the same (1964) rifle for my brother about 9 months ago for $750 plus shipping. Based on the research I did and what I paid, IMO the price is right. "Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult."

Post 64 M-70s aren't as bad as the publicity the've gotten. I'd offer him $600 for it.

I agree. I've got a 1970's M-70 in 375 H&H and I have been pleased with it. It is well made and consistently shoots 1 1/2" or better groups with reloads.

I surely agree that the post '64 Winchesters are fine rifles as I've owned severasl of them and all were very good rifles. I'd surely not shell out $800 for it however!!! And the guy that thinks it's worth $1000+ can hold on to it for a very long time!! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
