mod 70 375 h&h help needed
I have the chance to buy a mod 70 in 375h&h
ser # 714423 standard grade about 90 % . which i believe is a 1964 new mod 70 which is not near worth a pre 64 one.
the seller thinks its pre 64 and all my research says its a 1964. could i be wrong and i offered $800 was it too little or too much ?
please help this newbie !

Does it have an external claw extractor? If not, it is not a pre-64.

According to Armscollectors.Com it is not a pre-64:

quote:

The year of manufacture for serial number 714423 is 1964.

The post 1964 model began at number 700,000.

have you seen the rifle ?
if its a pre 64 it would have a CRF long extractor on the bolt, its a flat piece of metel on the right side that runs the length of the bolt body.
If its a post 64 the bolt body would be round along its whole length with no flat piece along the side.
If you want an example to look at, The new Ruger hawkeye is a CRF with the long extractor. (pre 64 style) And the remingtons 700 is a push feed.(post 64 style)...tj3006

I just recently saw a 1964 model priced at $800 so I don't think you're lowballing the guy, If anything, according to bluebook, you might be a little high.

I bought the same (1964) rifle for my brother about 9 months ago for $750 plus shipping. Based on the research I did and what I paid, IMO the price is right.

Post 64 M-70s aren't as bad as the publicity the've gotten. I'd offer him $600 for it.

I agree. I've got a 1970's M-70 in 375 H&H and I have been pleased with it. It is well made and consistently shoots 1 1/2" or better groups with reloads.

I surely agree that the post '64 Winchesters are fine rifles as I've owned severasl of them and all were very good rifles.

I'd surely not shell out $800 for it however!!! And the guy that thinks it's worth $1000+ can hold on to it for a very long time!!
