Really cheap 470 Nitro Express
Just saw that Ruger is making their No 1 in 475 Linbaugh. All it would need is a rechamber to make it a handy, but REALLY LIGHT, 470 NE. Don't know if I would care to shoot it, but it would be a really cheap way to get one!

With a "22 barrel, it shouldn't be too bad.

And at 7 lbs it might get the SAFARIKID seal of approval.

Will the barrel twist be correct though? Big difference in twist requirements between the two cartridges.

The twist is 1:18" for the Ruger.

That is even better than the 1:21" standard on the 470 NE.

1:10" works great with the 470 Capstick I have.
1:16" works great on the 470 Mbogo I have.

Twist is a non issue.
This is not a 1000-yard target rifle.

1:18" 475 Linebaugh/480 Ruger converted to 470 NE in the Ruger No. 1 should be excellent.
Good news! thumb

I would prefer to rebarrel a Ruger No.1 of any caliber with a heavier and longer barrel of faster twist, if I built a 470 NE on a Ruger No.1.
I would make it look similar to my 400/.395 NE 3" Aboriginal pictured below. 26" barrel not 22".
A 26" Ruger No.1 is same length as a 22" barreled bolt action.

Shorten the barrel as is 475 linebaugh to 18" and that is one handy pig plinker.

Too bad they're not making this in their stainless laminate. The laminated stock might hold together better and the stainless would make it easier to find if it gets away from you... Cool

I have a Ruger # 1 in 500 nitro, and you can use really hot loads with that action if you want. 570 grain bullets at 2365 ft/sec shoot just fine in it.

Can the Ruger No. 1-S Medium Sporter be rechambered to 470 Nitro safely???
Is there enough metal there?

boom stick,
Thanks for the pics.
The barrel looks too thin where the studs and screws are affixing the front portion of the quarter rib:
Reaming it out to 470 NE might leave a "chamber vent" in the barrel.

Lemme get this straight. Magna-porting should be done on the muzzle end, not the chamber, right?

Since the casehead is about .504" on the 475 linebaugh maybe a 470 Capstick with it's .510" casehead might be better choice and the extractor is only 10 thou larger than the Capstick rim.

The casehead of the 470 Nitro is .573" or about 60 thou larger than the Linebaugh or 30 thou less barrel meat but the 470 is lower in preasure.

Crap! Another tempting project ...

I saw the .475Linebaugh #1 befor a few weeks and fall in love. dancing The Linebaugh revolver is toooooo expensive and very rare in Germany and I´m a "rifleman", so this would be the right choice for me. But at the moment, the prices for new guns exploding in Germany and new Ruger #1 are listend for ~1400€, nearly 2000.-US-$. thumbdown

Jeffe... What is your opinion on a rechamber to Capstick, AR or 470 NE?

How much barrel thickness do you need in the chamber area?

Was thinking the lower preasure 470 Nitro ammo would be good if the metal thickness is marginal or a thinner round for this platform.

Isnt the Linebaugh around 40K psi round?
