Rusty,

What scope is that in the case and what calibers do you use it with?

Excellent African pair Ed. The 8x68S is a good metric substitute for my .338 Win Mag and I should have mentioned the .404 along with the 416 Rem Mag/Rigby/Taylor.

8x68S for all plains game except giraffe and also the cats if legal and the .404 for all thick skinned dangerous game and giraffe.

The 8x68S, like the .338 Win Mag, also makes an ideal one rifle solution for all North American big game including the great bears.

What scopes have you chosen for each?

Brazos Jack,
The scope is a Kahles, Helia CSX 1.1 X 4
I have it mounted for the 404 Jeffery barrel.
I have a Leupold 3X9 for the 375 H&H barrel.

Yes Ed I do! Big Grin
Thank God you are left handed. I'd have never gotten this rifle home! Big Grin

Every time I pull this rifle out at the range, the first thing folks say is not, "What kind of rifle is that?"
I'm trying to tell 'em what a great system the M03 is and all they have to say is, "Great looking wood!"

Your right Rusty I would have bought that gun!!!!

Brazos Jack, I put Luepold VX-7 glass on them the 2.5x10 on my 8x68S and 1.5x6 on the 404 with the Mauser QD mounts. They work great and the glass quality is right up there with Zeiss and others.

Rusty's take-down and the Waffenjung are spectacular!!!

For two D/R's for Africa:

(1) 9.3x74R at 7 pounds or so plus the QD S&B 1.25x5

(2) 470 NE at 10.5 pounds

Ammo aught to be obtainable over there if yours goes MIA.

For two B/A rifles:

375 H&H with bullets at 300 grns and a few at 230 grns

and 458 Lott with 400 grns and a few at 400 grns

Those are my "never been close to AFRICA" opinions.

Jack

OH GOD! {Seriously, we need the help.}

I just returned from Africa where I killed Blesbuck, Impalla, Zebra and Kudu stone dead with a 300 WSM using Barnes TTSX bullets.

I owned a Win .338 when I lived in Alaska and sold it shortly after Barnes X bullets came out. I no longer saw a reason for owning a .338 with modern bullet performance in .30 cal.

For dangerous game, I would think a 404 Jeffrey, .416 Remington or 450 NE would do well.

This recommendation would not cost a arm and a leg, like it would be with custom built big bores. In a standard factory rifle like a Winchester or a Brno/CZ it would be very affordable and suitable. Recoil at this level is also on the mild side and for the occasional hunter that hunts 2 or 3 times a year, I would second Ray's advice. Most PH's prefer that their clients are not recoil shy for what they bring to Africa. That first shot is your most important shot.

If Harry Manners could shoot a 1,000 plus elephant, then I am sure it can be done better today with our modern FN Solids. His story begins in 1937 when at an early age he shot his first elephant with tusks of over 80 pounds per side, using an old 10.75 mm Mauser rifle and continues until 1953 when ivory hunting was closed in Mozambique.

"To my knowledge the .375 H&H Magnum has been proven by five experienced professionals to be a suitable calibre for the hunting of elephant, whether for the citizen sport hunter who may shoot only one elephant in his lifetime (provided he knows exactly where to place his bullet) and for the experienced professional, but I confess to a few doubts to its suitability when the newly licenced professional is not yet experienced." .....
