fordnutterRecahmber Ruger no1 in 480 ruger to 470 Nitro express???
Hi guys,
Anyone thought of rechambering one of Rugers no1 rifle in 480 Ruger to 470 Nitro Express?
If the barrel contour allows the only negatives seem to be weight (71/4" pounds) and a twist rate rate of 1-18". You could soon add some mercury recoil arrestors to stock but how suitable is the twist rate rate going to be. Will it still stabilise up to 500gr projectiles?

jeffeosso1:22 is the old standard for 470NE...
it will be a bit light, but its not hard to add weight...

ConWhen I had the 470Capstick ... 1:18" did fine with 500gr Woodleighs.
Cheers...

fordnutterOk sounds like it would be pretty plain sailing. So as long as their is enough meat in the barrel for the rechamber it should be straight forward enough. Might have to talk to my gunsmith about this one. Unless ruger include the 470 Nitro in their lineup this might be the only way I'll ever own a 470 on a tight budget.

First off you better check to see how deep the holes are for the quarter rib. The 470NE is a 500NE parent case and is pritty large way down the barrel. 3" in front of the breech is not the place for "MAGNA-PORTING"!

jeffeossoMac's advice is correct ...
480 ryger is about .510 base diamere, i THINK the 470 and 416 rigby have the same case (not rim) max diameter, or about .590 .. and .590 is a factory chambering ..

Ross Seyfried did a rebore on a No.1 to 470 quite a few years back for a magazine article but I think he used a 458 Tropical. Seems that LaBouty did the work. Not as cheap as the 480 project but perhaps more practical and still a cheap 470.

I thought 458 to 470 would be too small of a step-up for a rebore.

RIPFirst, allow me to say, to DRG: Kiss my grits.
As you were.
Most who have done 470 NE on No.1s have rebarreled.
Maybe the .375 Tropical could be rebored?
Cheaper and quicker to rebarrel a used No.1.
Get the twist and sights you want.
I think I'll do one with Sharps Quigley sights by Pedersoli.
Like my Business 45-70.
Allow me to rain on the parade.
The 475 1-S weighs 7.25 lbs and has a 22" barrel.
The 375 to 458 1-H Tropicals weigh 9 lbs with 24" barrels.
The little 1-S has a skimpy-short shank appropriate for the handgun cartridge.
The Tropicals have much longer shank (knoxform).
The pins and screws holding the quarter rib on will likely communicate with the bore of the 1-S,
if it is rechambered from 475 Linebaugh to 470 NE.
Like Mac said.

PWSHow about a #1 .480Ruger to .475 Turnbull?
Despite the fatter case, it's a lot shorter than the .470NE and might leave enough material?

boom stickIf you were worried about leaving enough material the 470 capstick makes the most sense.
only a few thou casehead diff off the 480 ruger.
