Anyone know what the cartridge dimensions are on the .500 Jeffrey -- or where I can find them? Particularly, will the .500 Jeffrey fit in a non-magnum (.30-06) action?

Yes, with about $1500-$2000 dollars worth of parts and expertise.

You should get a copy of the A-square reloading manual Any Shot You Want, it is the definitive refrence for big bore nuts and a must have.

Case head is .620" in dia, rim is .575" in dia, case is 2.755" long.

As tiggergate said, it can be made to fit in a standard length action, but I think his cost estimate is on the low side, as that would just about cover the work for the magazine and feed rails.

As much as I enjoy the 500 Jeffrey, the practicle and sensible way to get into a 50 is to get a 416 Rigby, CZ or Ruger, or a 460 Weatherby, and have them turned into a 500 A-square. Much less work to make the round function, brass is 1/2 the price of the Jeffrey, and you can find it! and you give up a whopping 100 fps, put another way, if 600's @ 2400 fps isn't enough for you, the 500 Jeffrey wasn't the answer anyhow.

I don't have the Jeffrey dims in front of me, but it seems kinda puny and frilly compared to the 505 Gibbs.

This one is set up on a standard 98.It has a single stack magazine and feeds great.

Thanks, I would welcome the chance. Sounds like the .500 Jeffrey is a great round, if you have a rifle in that caliber already; otherwise, look for another choice. My search for the ideal caliber to build on an '03 Springfield action continues . . .

MJines - Take a look at SABI Rifles of Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, RSA. They specialize in making .500 Jeffreys out of 98 Mauser actions. I visited there in 2004 and the work they do is superlative. He explained to me how they milled 1 1/2 MM from the front of the magazine opening and 3 1/2 MM from the rear and constructed a one-piece stainless steel box bolstered by a lug screwed to the bottom front side of the receiver to support this mag box. Look at their website and see what they offer.

Not really. There are some fellows who are world class experts at getting a .500 jeff to feed. For example, Duane Wiebe of Washington state and Ryan Breeding of California. But you need a significant budget to hire that type of expertise.

PM boha, he just finished a .500 Jeffrey on a standard action (Huskie) and it feeds/works/shoots beautifully.

I have had a couple of 500 Jeffery's, on Mausers it is one of my favorites. There are guys out there that can make them feed correctly but it takes a special touch. Also, I was told at the NRA show in Houston last year by the guys at Waffenfabrik Hein that they build one of theer actions for the 500 Jeffery, I am considering that action for my next 500.

For my '03 Springfield project, I am leaning towards the .458 WM at this point. I know that the .458 WM is not without issues but it should be fine as a dangerous game rifle, its case length is such that it won't take a wizard (or fortune) to modify the action, ammo will be readily available at a decent cost, and if velocity is ever a major concern I can always go with handloads or reach out to someone like Superior for a good load. But in terms of a buffalo hunt, seems to me that the '03 action in .458 WM should do just fine -- am I drawing the wrong conclusion?

Spent some time talking to Tip Burns yesterday at the DSC. (Tip seems like an absolutely great person by the way.) Tip does not believe that it would be that problematic to get a .500 Jeffrey to work properly on a '03 Springfield action. He was going to do some tinkering around his shop and get back with me. I will let the let the group know what I hear. Would really like to find a way to do the Jeffrey versus something as bourgeois as a .458 WM. Stay tuned . . . .

Tip has built the Houston Safari Club President's rifle in 500 and it will be at the show next weekend. He and I looked at an original Schuler (Germanic 500 Jeff) to see how it was done long ago. I wouldn't be surprised if Tip might make some more of these. Bob
