ScottSNeed a hunting partner with a 45/70
I hear all the time how great the 45/70 is. So I thought to myself why not ask one of the 45/70 guys to go hunting/shooting with me so I can see first hand how impressive it is on large heavy game. Therefore, I would like to cordially invite any of you 45/70 guys to go harvest a bison with me this year. I'll use my own rifle, but will watch the 45/70 kill.
The data is open, but will fall sometime in November or December of this year. Probably will take place in Southern Ohio.

Idaho SharpshooterDecember of 2005 I took my Shiloh Sharps LRE 45-70 with a hard cast 500gr bullet at 1470fps Bison Hunting. 217 yds, one shot, right behind the crease about half way up. Bull went down, staggered up and went 20 feet to water, laid down and gave the death bellow. Ten seconds from boom! to meat.

RollandDid the same in December of 2006 in the sand hills of northern Nebraska. Shiloh #1 Sporter 45-70 585 grain 30-1 bullet 70 grains of Swiss 1 1/2F. 115 yards it did not move from the spot. Just tumbled down the hill a little ways.

Never rode a bull, but have shot some.

PeterWell Scott, I have a Ruger #1 in 45/70 that I would love to "blood". Maybe you can back me up with your gun in case of a charge? I would also like to hunt Bison in their native habitat in Southern Ohio, but I don't want to have to get out of the truck to open the gate..... How much?
Peter.

ireload2I thought 30 million buffalo had already proved that a 45/70 will work?
04 January 2008, 03:22
ScottSPeter,
The prices range from ~ $900 to $2800. The $900 place isn't in Ohio though.
Why do you feel my rifle would be better than you 45/70 in case of a charge?

richjI'll bring my Spartan :-)

jwp475500 Linebaugh 525 grain hard cast flat point at 100 FPS one shot and the bullet exited. This Bull went nowhere....

tradmarkwell, since my 454 got complete pass through penetration this last year, i'd be more than thrilled to bring a 45/70 this next year, and i know a place that'll let you shoot them as low as 825-900 bucks, ranging on 40000 acres and you can take em as you see fit.
this certainly will be more productive than closing down discussion on the topic like happens on other threads. discussion sure is threatening.

ScottSNice pictures and stories gentlemen, but I am interested in seeing the results in person. No one of the 45/70ers wants to show me, in person, just how impressively effective the 45/70 is? I am disappointed.
By the way, I must insist that the shot placement not be into the CNS, but rather be a solid double lung shot missing the major bones. We are after all interested in maximizing the amount of meat to be had. The reason for no central nervous system hits (that would be spine or brain) is that it proves nothing as a measely 45 ACP will get that done with ease.

boom stickI would like to but the costs involved are my limiting factor.
check youtube for some bison 45-70 hunt results.

Yankee DoodleOK, I'm interested.
PM me with all pertinent facts. Date, total costs, location, etc. My old Ruger #3 is up for the challenge.

Why not break down an buy a 45-70 and do it yourself? It seems you have something to prove to yourself. We already know how well a 45-70 kills. I have seen Buffalo, Moose, Black Bear, Deer and hog's all kill with one shot from a 45-70. I don't feel anyone needs to justify a round that is older than any of us here. nuff said.
Oh by the way, I own 3 of them.
If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

ScottSRob,
If it will kill a bison it will do likewise to a cape buffalo!
My point is I want to see first hand just how well it kills said bison!

PeterTradmark, how about PMing me the information on where to hunt bison? 40,000 acres sounds fair enough.
Thanks, Peter.

ScottSakrange,
I miss your point. Is there one, or are you simply stating your ignorance?

RobgunbuilderScottS- so will a .22LR does that make it a DGR?-Rob

ScottSRob,
Absolutely not! However, the question of DGR is not the point of this thread. I simply want to see the devastating effectiveness of the 45-70 on a large heavy animal first hand.

MacifejIf any of you Yahoo's is serious about testing the REAL power of the 45-70 on Game then you can take up my offer of these remaining rounds from a batch of 50 I had loaded for my 26" Encore pipe barreled especiale. 2600+ FPS.
I'll send them to any experienced shooter who will use them in a #1 or Encore and post the results.

Macifej250 Grain XFN
I shot 40 or so of these from my custom Encore with a 26" pipe barrel at the range.
About a 10.5 lb gun with custom kevlar stocks, decel pad, marbles steel sights, see thru rings, & a 1.5-5 x 20 Looper. Pretty comfy, super accurate, no fouling to speak of......I traded the rifle a while ago and sold all the factory ammo here. This is what's left.
06 January 2008, 21:55
PeterMacifej. I am definitely interested. I have a #1 in 45/70 and with heavy bullets and loads, it is NOT comfortable. I would be very interested in trying lighter bullets. If we can't swing the actual loaded rounds perhaps you can tell me what make bullets and what loads you are using.
Thanks, Peter.

tradmarkanyone that wants info on the bison hunt can email me at habumark@yahoo.com
what exactly makes something a DGR? what's the threshold? to stop a bonafide charge you pretty much have to hit the cns, to think otherwise is just kidding yourself. so......if the round will make extremely reliable penetration into the cns from any angle, what more do you need, in fact, to imply a certain fp of energy would stop anything over 1K lbs with a chest shot is not only foolish but quite dangerous. sullivan tries this on a buff with a 600 NITRO and the buff doesn't even know it's been shot, one of his two compadres stops it with a brain shot. you either brain it or not. instances of large bores not stunning ele's with shots within inches of the brain are too numerous to count on. makes me wonder if sullivan isn't doing a much much bigger public service than we all think.
