What happened to the .470 Capstick?

kayakerWhat happened to the .470 Capstick?
I thought is was a neat idea when it came out.
A 'big bore' based on a common case that is easy and more affordable and build in common actions like M98, M70, CZ etc with minimum work and lower reloading costs (i.e. form your own cases from .375's)
I didn't think it would ever challenge the .458 lott or the .450 Watts/.450Ackley due to .458 bullets being more commonly available in 'std grade' practice types (eg Hornady).
Given that the .458 Lott is now commercialised ITO rifles and ammo, is this the death knell for the .470 Capstick (and .450 Watts/Ackley)?
I mean, the .458 lott was always more popular right? - due to the bullet affordability and availability issue and the fact that many existing .458 Wins could be easily rechambered.
Has anyone other than A-Square or Winchester Custom Shop chambered rifles commercially for it? What about ammo other than A2?
Your opinions or experience?
Cheers

GeorgeSThe .470 Capstick is where it always has been; a potent cartridge chambered by few makers.
Let's face it, true big bores (.45 caliber and up) are an infinitesimal niche. It took a long time for any of the big U.S. makers to chamber rifles in .416 Rigby, .458 Lott, and .470 Capstick, even in their 'Custom Shops'.
Most will continue to be built by independent riflesmiths.

LJSI had a custom rifle built using a pre 64 mag Winchester action. Superior Ammo routinely will supply ammo for the beast. It seems to me the recoil is substantial but not as sharp as an equal weighted Lott. I could not solve feeding problems with the gun so it went down the road.

GeorgeSBTW, the rifle in my photo is a Winchester Model 70 .470 Capstick.

Infinitesimal is far more accurate, when you consider the number of bolt-action rifles sold around the world compared to how many are chambered in .458 and up.
If you can't handle 'big words', expand your vocabulary, don't limit mine.

boom sticki am not pissing on your vocabulary just thought it was a funny word to use which only an "infinitesimal" amount of people would understand. i wish more people had chalenging vocabulary. i have had too rough a day to nitpick or have a pissing contest. i like the capstick, i like that huge dugga and i like big words...sorry if i have become déclassé

470CapstickA2Well, I have an A Square Hannibal in 470 capstick... go figure.. someone posted the other day that AA had some guns ready for sale in several calibers and you could get a 470 capstick for about 3100$, which I think is a great price for this gun. Coil check stock is nice, work on my gun is very high quality, and I shooot 1.5" 3 shot groups at 100 yds... ammo is cheap at around $4.50 a round, so I use mine to build up to the recoil of my new double... So for what a box of federal 375 h&h costs, I can shoot a 470 capstick, and it's just plain more fun for me...
Like you said, since it's easy to make and reload ammo for, and most people into this type of gun would just pay for a custom gun, you probably won't see the big makers produce it..
Just my thoughts... I really like mine

Now that you got that .475 double, you'll probably never shoot that A-Square again!

It must be; you seem intent on getting the last word in.
Do me a favor - don't reply to any post I make.

butchlocthe safari series of win. mod 70's had one in 470 crapstick. Sort of suprising that they brought out one of them in a wildcat. (I think it was the rhino) Hellofva nice series of mod 70's - my son got the whole set & I'm not sure i shouldn't go steal em. anyway in my humble opinion (for what its worth) I believe the 470 is a better caliber for DG than is a 45, just because of the larger cross sectional area.

msorensoARE THE BALLISTICS ABOUT EQUAL BETWEEN THE CAPSTICK AND LOTT??

28 February 2006, 22:06
jeffeossothe 470 capstick is reputed to be 500gr at 2400fps...
the lott is 500gr at 2300...

Please turn off your caps-lock.
Ballistics are equivalent, but not quite equal. As Jeffeosso pointed out, the velocities are a bit higher in the Capstick (YMMV), and as butchloc mentioned, the .474" bullets have a .016" edge on the .458" bullets used by the Lott.
I don't think a Cape buffalo could tell the difference between them, but if you want something a bit different while still using a .375H&H-based cartridge, the .470 Capstick is a good choice.

vapodogIt would behoove one to consider the market for the .470 Capstick to be miniscule at best. The overwhelming preponderance of shooters would choose the .458 Lott primarily due to it's availability of factory ammo and it's near twin performance to the encumbered Capstick's availibility of components.

Idaho SharpshooterI (personally) think the 470 Capstick is a reflection of its namesake, a bit much ado about nothing...
I base this only on having seen all of his DVD's this past week and fired one rifle. The 470 does not do much of anything better, only differently, IMCO*. The reason the 458 Lott is such a good seller is that it does something better, better than any other 45 caliber rifle except the 450 Rigby and big Weatherbyand uses a standard '98 action. There are too may better choices for the same $$$.
Rich
*IMCO; in my considered opinion. This vs IMHO which has no logic or data involved.

jeffeosso458 bullets are CHEAP compared to 475 bullets... even plinkers are 12¢ vs a quarter... and when you shoot as much as some big bore bubba's do, that can add up.
the 470 AR is designed to do the same thing in a standard action, fwiw

Actually, NO. the capstick is a 3.65" round and the 458 winmag is a 3.35" round... that .3" CAN be seen as being incrementals of an $2500/inch gunsmithing charge
The 470 AR was designed around that specific inch. rebarrel, little feeding, off to the races...
of course the 458 AR is "just" a chamber job on a 458 Winmag, to take 500gr bullets WAY over 2300 fps
