300 H&H

I have a Dakota Traveler in 375 H&H and 458 Lott. Having hunted Africa several times using this combo and with the ease of international travel with a takedown I have been considering ordering a 300H&H barrel. My intended application would be relatively long distance shots (200-350 yard)at African plains game, US/NZ elk,red stag etc. As an avid reloader I am not terribly concerned about the relative lack of facory ammo availability for this caliber. Would appreciate any insights that all the experience on this forum can offer.

AfricanHunterIt's a darn fine cartridge. I've used it off and on for 56 years and still use it.

WyoJoeIt is an excellent round for what you stated. I got my first elk with one.

<Mike McGuire>I reckon if Winchester brought out a copy of the 375 Safari in 300 H&H, and with sights, at the same price they would sell plenty. Probably do better selling 375s as well to shooters who like the idea they could in the future get a copy in 300 H&H.

Idaho SharpshooterAT SHOT Show Hornady showed off their new 300 H&H ammunition. 180gr Interbond at 2870fps MV.
I got some ordered and am taking my shiny new CZ to SA plains game hunting in forty-seven days.

MFDRealize you already have the core of a rifle and considering 300HH barrel, but Winchester just released their Model 85 in 300H&H and 375H&H. Would think it would make a fine plains game rifle for shooter friend of mine shot a bull barreled Mod. 70 in 300H&H in long range matches and did very well with it out to the 1000yd line. He often referred to it as his "super 30" which I think is the name the Brits assigned to it some century ago.

I noticed that a few days ago on the website. Maybe an indicator of an M70 300 H&H

Idaho SharpshooterI would just buy some of the new Hornady 180gr Interlock 300 H&H ammunition they showed at SHOT and SCI Reno and take it with me.

Well, Jeffy, if you want more velocity, then bypass the Winnie and put a custom barrel in 300 Weatherby on your action. Yes, I know it takes a longer magazine, but that can be solved as well.

jeffeossoVelocity wasn't my point... there's 300 winmag in EVERY walmart, and almost every other bait, bullets, and beer store I've ever seen ....

RyanBI keep getting conflicting reports about the Dakota Traveler. Does it hold zero when taken down and reassembled with the other barrel? Withing, say a half minute?

did you read Shikaribabu's original post?

Personally I have never had any issues with my Traveler holding zero when taken down and reassembled with another barrel. I have done so during my trips to Africa eg. shot with the 375HH hunting hippo, croc, leopard and switching to the 458 Lott for buffalo.
As to the quality of build of the Traveler all I can say is that I decided on it after quite some research that included handling finished products from their major competitors. I put my list of DGR requirements together and went out to Sturgis, SD and met face to face with those at DA that would be building my rifle and made sure that both parties walked away with a very good understanding of what was expected. BTW this included choosing the wood. Once the rifle was near completion I went out to Sturgis, SD again to make sure that it was up to my expectations and test fired it using the loads that DA had developed for me. Best thing I ever did. I am not a wealthy person and as this represented a sizeable investment on my part I wanted to be safe rather than sorry. All that I can say is I now have the exact DGR rig that I wanted and after hunting with it for some 3 seasons in Africa this has turned out to be one of the better decisions that I have made.

mauser93Awfully good to know that Dakota is building rifles to Don Allen-era standards again. That seems to have faltered for awhile during the time that senior management was raping the company.
Now owned by huge Euro LLC (Remington, DPMS, et al), so plenty of money available.

kenoneillshikaribabu,
The .300 H&H has a lot of nostalgia going for it. I had a Win. Mdl. 70 chambered for it that was the smoothest feeding rifle I ever owned. I hunted with the rifle in South Africa and Austalia. In the 10 years I owned the rifle I used both Remington factory ammo, and handloads using the 180 gr. Nosler Partition driven by H-4831. It served me very well.

Well, here's my experience. I had a really nice Dakota in .416 Rigby. Then I saw a very nice Traveler in .416 Rem and .300H&H with two scopes and case etc. So I sold my rifle to get the Traveler and took it to Zimbabwe.
I think on average, my Traveler shot about six inches low at 50 yards after takedown and reassembly. That's with the same barrel. So, sighting in at home was a waste of time. I read the instructions and all so I'm pretty sure I was doing things correctly.
I took a nice buffalo with it, but I sold it within a month of coming back from Africa.

<Mike McGuire>Unless you were very lucky the only way to change barrels and return to point of impact for the respective barrel would be with the scope mounted on the barrel, not the action.
With a bench rest rifle you can loosen the barrel between shots and still shoot half inch. But put a different barrel on and point of impact can be several inches away.

You have to be careful with the D76 traveller concerning Xtra brls, an third barrel can be difficult combo to achieve.Cause your using the same bolt, The third lapping process can negatively effect the fit of the first two barrels. Two barrel set ups are generally not a problem.
