in a word....NO!

Two reasons:
1. the troops are not likely to be issued Hawkeyes in the near future.
2. the government is not going to give free ammunition to the camel hunters over there for decimating the herds.

Just stop it you s--t disturber!

I do not think there are enough "hate threads" or followers yet, to make the 375R become the new 45-70

Whitworth,

to date the 45-70 has a better record on Cape Buffalo than the 375R. The average number of shots on the Ruger-hosted Safari per buff was three. The per average by a hunter who paid his own way and used the Marlin was TWO buff per shot! Just a little something to consider.

It depends on how many ignorant fools buy a .375 Ruger. If the number approaches the numbers of ignorant fools who own .45-70s, then it just might be. Big Grin

Of course, if someone starts selling 'magical' hardcast bullets for the .375 Ruger, it will draw the ignorant fools in like shit draws flies. stir

The confidence limits on this claim must be nearly infinite. animal

Your data set is one TV show for the Ruger, and one outdoor writer for the 45/70.

Too funny.

On the internet that is a valid statistical analysis.

.45-70 is a very useful revolver cartridge for dispatching wounded animals and shooting monkeys. It's more versatile than the .44Mag in my estimation. It just isn't worth a damn in a rilfe, not unlike the .44Mag.

Are you kidding me? I get 2300 fps out of a 300 grainer in a 18" barrel. How much of that do you expect with a revolver, and can your wrist take the recoil?

My .45-70 revolver actually weighs more loaded than my .577 Snider carbine which is known to throw 500 grainers.

Was a bit of a joke but I have strong wrists. Good natured teasing. Maybe I forgot a smiley wink.

I can get close to those velocities in my 14.5 inch barrel.

Still like my rifle .45s to say Lott on them cos I drank the Lott kool-aid.

No offense was intended but was hoping for a chuckle, and I'm not joking about the 14.5" horse pistol. It's pretty easily shootable too. The .450 Marlin wheel is the one that is hard on the wrist.

But, comparing a .375 rifle to a .45-70 is sorta like comparing a .45ACP to a .410 shottie. Sorta a weird comparison even if you could make an excuse for doing it.

I would have to say no.

It is actually the NEW 375 H&H, hence all the discussion, since it is treading on hallowed ground.

I expect unsolicited comments from 375 Ruger owners at the range, coming up to tell me what a wonderful, powerful, and superior weapon they have. In that way it may replace the 45-70 (and 450 Marlin). For some reason you always get that from 45-70 owners and the 375 Ruger seems to be attracting many of the same people.

Of course from a ballistic standpoint, it is much different than the 45-70. If it does reach popularity it might become the new .338. And therefore the most popular big gun for North America. But other gun and ammo manufacturers have to jump on the band wagon for that to happen.

Around here I mostly get that from 10mm handgunners but I see your point.

I would say just the opposite. Instead of the whole big bullet- low velocity crowd, I think it's more the high velocity and compact rifle shooters.

375 Ruger is more versatile...No question about that. Reasonably amount of power with a trajectory similar to a 30-06...Good up close and far away.

Not to say the 45-70 can't be used at longer ranges, of course, but it's more involved than just plunking crosshairs on the top of a moose at 350 yards. Wink

Dont know, just the vibe I get. I guess its the language I hear from certain folks at the gun shops and shows. Actually its probably not so much the 45-70 but it definitely reminds me of the way people talk about 450 Marlin and the "guide gun idea".

As I think about it some more, it probably has more to do with marketing by the gun/ammo companies. An old idea being repackaged slightly and being marketed as something new and revolutionary, and at a great price. Just seems to be attracting the same people.

I don't need a 375R but I can see what a smart idea it is, 375H&H+ performance in a standard sized action.

If the 375R was introduced before 2004 when I found my left handed 375 H&H, I would have bought one in a heartbeat.

Maybe I'm becoming an elitist, but in general I've always felt just the opposite. In fact I still spend most of my hunting with pretty humble rifles (35 rem. and 45-70 Marlins), hunting east coast whitetails with tiny racks. All my life people would come up and say that I'm some sort of low brow for using those inferior designs.

Now I expect to get the same thing from the 375 Ruger crowd when I take my 375 H&H out. I'll be annoyed, and if that makes me elitist then I guess thats what I am.

I actually like the idea of the 375 Ruger. I've been thinking about getting a 338 but may opt for the Ruger instead.
