This is my first DGR after wanting one for several years. It is a .416 Taylor on a custom built 98 Mauser action with a Douglas barrel, Timney trigger, and a laminated stock. The guy I bought it from built it and he threw in some Hornady dies. He is going to give me some more .458 brass and some bullets as soon as he finds them. Grand total...$550.00. It is a eautiful rifle, the guy is a true craftsmen. I live in Oregon so it is my new black bear / elk rifle. I have been a long time reader and love the forum. You guys let me know what you think.

jstevensThe only thing I can see it needs is a barrel band swivel, some NECG sights, and a 1.5-6x scope of some sort. .416 Taylor seems to be Boddington's favorite DGR.

carnold724I am going to replace the scope. I was looking at some of the lower power Leupolds. Any other ideas as far as scope brands? A buddy has a Schmidt Bender sitting in his safe that he said he would consider getting rid of. I think it will be a little out of my range though.I like the idea of adding open sights also. What will the barrel band swivel do for me? Is it more functional or just for style? And what are NECG sights? A brand? Im new to the big bore game...

jstevensNew England Custom Guns sells a nice express sight that is probably the standard for a DGR. For me I like the looks of a barrel band swivel and it gets the muzzle where it isn't over my head catching on brush when slung. Besides that, the banded front sight and barrel band swivel looks better on a big rifle.

Husqvarna M98Doesn´t that rifle deserve some nice bases and scope rings?
I personaly dont care for the full lenght one piece bases.
All in all though a great DGR in the making.

carnold724After looking at those I think I prefer the 2 piece bases. When I figure out a scope to get I will get new rings and bases also.

Charles_HelmI always preferred two-piece bases myself -- I am sure you will like the change.
Some people feel that putting the front swivel on the barrel reduces the chance of it recoiling back into your supporting hand when shooting. Looking at the picture of Canuck's 470 Mbogo, maybe not!
Open sights will be a nice addition if you decide to put them on, but the bottom line is you have a nice rifle you can shoot now. Good work.

Nice looking DGR and from what I have read the caliber is an all around winner. I bought some Nikon's - 1.5x4.75 -scopes, Monarch UCC, and paid a bit over 200 for them and have shot one on my 458Lott "a lot" and they work just fine and saved couple hundred bucks over the Leupold's. Not knocking Leupolds in any way for own them, both sporting and tactical versions, but do like the Nikons for the value they represent. Clarity is excellent and so far have stood up to some pretty rough treatment and obviously stout recoil. Again, great rifle/caliber combo and good luck.

Idaho Sharpshooterreally a great rifle at a "gimme" price. As far as changes, the guys have made the suggestions that will "Classicize" (is that a word?...is now) the rifle.
As far as the barrel band, about 25 years ago I let a friend's Father shoot my 460 Buhmiller...had the sling stud in the forearm...first shot cut a furrow across his left index finger about swivel wide and swivel deep...and he dropped my dang rifle on the gravel road! One might say he left his mark on the rifle, after the rifle left its mark on him.

carnold724Thats a good point. I am going to shoot it before any mods and see how I like it. It has a 26" tube so I'm looking forward to working up some good loads with 300-350 grain slugs and decent velocity. I might even use it to go after some Blacktail this year. I'm stoked to finally have a boomer. The way I figure it I have my .300 Win Mag as my "smallbore" my .416 for the "medium bore" and now I'm thinking I need a .577 T-Rex or .585 Nyati for some "big bore" flavoring...My friends think I'm nuts but I feel like I fit in here!

cmfic1Its a Leupold Vari XIII 1.5-5, I have since replaced it with two other Leupolds one a 1.75-6 the other a 2.5-8.
I also replaced the Talley QR's for Leupold QR's.

jeffeossofor the taylor, get the bushnell 3200 2x7, it has TONS of eye relief.. i've got them on my 416 AR (nearly 20 more grains of H20) and haven't hurt it.
the sling swivel WILL get you, and it shant be funny to you
nice gun, great place to start.
speer 350gr magtip bullets in that? have fun, they are flying bombs

ledvmIn regards to the scope mounts, it is most important to change due to the fact that standard Leuopold rotary front ring with the windage adjustable rear ring may not hold zero on a big rifle. Need either weaver style, Talleys, or similar IMHO.
