quick story on the 550 express loaded with 10b soft lead 700gr cast

Pig hunting - well, shooting .. but, anyway, it's a clear hot day in south Texas, and I've been stalking this sounder awhile - It's hot, and I mean South Texas hot, and the guide is, well, talkative, pushy, and mouthy

we make a couple decent stalks, and the first time I have a shot, as I am VERY GENTLY squeezing the trigger, senior guide pats (whacks) on the right shoulder (BOOM) to tell me to shoot. An iron sighted rifle, I break my sunglasses under recoil.

i jerk the bolt open, spit blood from my split lip on his boots, and remind him that unwanted touching is assault. Remember, I am 6'4, tend to be about 240#, am dazed from receiving 120# of unexpected recoil .. I might have had the slightly crazed of a green eyed demon. How am I to know, it's not like I am short tempered at times.

He says "you missed"
I said "I had some help"

about 3 hours later, with the guide keeping at least 20 feet from me, the sounder goes down a wash, and a boar stops and glares at me.. BOOM! - right on the on-shoulder, one can hear "dripping" before the echo stops, boar staggers off

As I am walking to the spot of the shot, the guide runs up to me, screaming at the top of his lungs "he ran, we have to chase him" and starts running pell mell (yes, i know it's pallmall)over rocks, snags, mud after the sounder.. down the wash, through some brush, and circles around.. coming back to yell at me that they are running this way...

<sigh>
I just look at him...
eventually he comes back, red faced, telling me I've wounded a pig, and if we don't recover it, i have to pay maximum price (i said it was shooting) for a lost pig ... regardless that I hadn't seen anything over 120# .

He is urging me to follow him, we'll get 'em, etc...

I just look at him...

He gets more frantic, talking about how far a wounded boar can run, that it's going to take hours, how big i have to tip him to not pay max fee, etc

I look at him, unload my rifle, and sigh.

"Dude, you've been chasing pigs awhile, huh? seen em shot and run off"

"Yes, sir.. if you don't find em, it's maximmum fee.. we have to hunt him down, he could run for miles"

I look down at the ground, where most of the off-leg is laying on the ground, and a horror show of bits is spread out in a fan, into the brush, blood painted leave.

"How far have you seen em run with no lungs and missing an entire leg?"

he looks at the ground for the first time .. i point to one of the "rocks" he leaped over chasing the sounder.. downhill, where he was pointed when I hit him...

"Go recover my pig, he's right there" .. about 10ft away

Wow, Jeff! What a story and what a loser of a guide! I have a question about the 550 express you used in that case. What velocity were you getting and what lead alloy type were you using to get that kind of result? I have wanted to come up with a cast load for my 577 nitro single shot to use for hogs out near Junction, Texas.

So far, my cast load is a 650 flat nose cast with wheel weights and enough Reloader 15 to get it going about 1800fps.

Thanks for the story. I would like to know who that guide was so he can be avoided like the plague.

Great story by Jeff, but I would love to hear more about this rifle on pigs!

.500 Jeffery I built on a Winchester Pattern 14 Enfield, and a .500 3" NE I built on a Ruger No1 with a Mcgowen Barrel, back when the real Mcgowen Barrels was still in business. A buddy has that one now, loads it like a 50-140 and uses it on hogs.

i believe that load was about 1950fps .. of course it was "custom" mold, and wayne doudna cast them for me ... where he and my mold are, only the shadow knows.

I devised the 550 express to be a "cheap" alternative to the 577 NE in a "cheap" mauser action - A friend of mine was a PH with a 577 double and a 416 rigby . he complained about the 577 recoil to fend off hippos from a boat. I wanted to get him something to use, that wasn't a 20-30k rifle off a boat.

very effective caliber. able to get the ME and momentum of a 577 NE .. as my friend Richard and I had done a TON of work getting to 2050fps in the 577 x750gr .. Ross's loads aren't even CLOSE. Until I took (and saw) animals with taken with the 577, i couldn't even understand the real effect.

Soft lead 550 bullets pancaked, but didn't shatter.. another story is the same alloy, at .583, in a kodiak double ML... it hit the sand outside of Mendien, LA... was shooting with my son-in-law and youngest son, hit the sand ... made helicopter noises... and we watched the top of a tree fall down 200 yards away ... it had pancaked and spun away.

Ive shot and seen game taken with a 585 nyati .. AMAZING round .. opened to about 2" .. but still nothing like the 550 express.

btw, soft woodleigh .510 bullets REALLY open up at 2300 fps (might have been 2400) at more or less pointblank in the skull of piggies

Love my Frank Wells Gibbs .505 and VC .577. Not sure which is best for Africa but for longer shots the Gibbs groups 3” 300 yds with scope for also plains game and 577 2-3” at 100 yd with red dot. Both kill buffalo very quickly.

Wish there was more time to hunt Africa. Just came back this week. No problems traveling except time to get PCR test and 24 hour turnaround. Found out PCR Is available in Johannesburg Tambo airport with 2 hour turnaround.

Not only is the 550 a nice round, but it makes me think of the 500 AccRel as a light, all arounder.

on the 585 nyati .. Ross's drawing is FLAWED, and you must use RGB's mods that it will chamber.

The 550 is super easy, on a single stack

the 500 Acrel/nyati .. using the shorter throat, it is perfectly useful for all mono's ... longer throat if you want to shoot BMG bullets.

The 500 Accrel is the hammer of the gods for anything short of a t-rex, the 490 is the same thing, but nothing about it is .500 or more.

Many, many, many years ago a couple of friend of mine had some military surplus anti-tank guns.
So I actually got to fire a Boyes .55 British anti tank rifle, and a Lahti 20mm anti tank rifle. Believe it or not the Boyes actually kicked more than the Lahti. Both were fun to shoot BUT wouldn't want to try to feed them today,$$$$$$. Lost track of the friends but am almost positive both friends have gone to the big range in the sky.

I'm late to this one but I have a Gallagher built 500 Linebaugh with Rob Rowen Dall Sheep grips from a Ram that I shot in the Brooks Range here in Alaska. I had sent it back to John for some additions and during that time John ended up in his unfortunate battle with cancer. Lord Rest his Soul. Since John couldn't finish the work because of his health, he sent it to his good friend Hamilton Bowen to finish it up. So now it is a Gallagher, Rowen, Bowen gun. A keepsake for sure. A few years ago a took a Moose with it, meat bull, big body, little antlers. 455gr 1300fps 43 yds.

I can't believe I have not posted in this thread before. I've been shooting smaller stuff the last few years but I should dig out the 50 BMG and 4 bore muzzle loader and give them a whirl. I'm casually looking for a top lever hammer paradox rifle which should qualify as another entry when I find the right one.

Damnit Ray, I resurrected this thread to get a read on your’s and a bunch of other member’s big bore experiences. I know you have danced with a 510/505 in the past. I’d like to hear more about that one!
I seem to recall you had some rather obscure big bores, as well. Tell us more about you exploits.

I have taken three elephant, five Cape buffalo and one black rhinoceros with the .505 SRE.
The SRE/VSRE cartridges are wildcats, developed by me, designed to duplicate the .500 Jeffrey, .500 NE, .505 Gibbs and .577NE in short (2.500") cases meant for bolt action rifles. The .500 SRE and the .577 VSRE now belong to Buckstix.
Not one of them is unpleasant to shoot.
