I have been so impressed with the effectiveness of my 400 Jeff. 400 grain @ 2100f/s I wonder if it would be possible to have a remington pump made up into a 400 whelen. That would give almost the same ballistics with very fast follow up shots? I suppose it would be pretty nasty in the recoil dept. Has anyone done this? I'm not sure about the pump, but I have a 411 Hawk (sort of an "improved" 400 Whelen) built on a lever action (Win 1895) that works just fine. Have no idea if the pump would constrain you in any way.

I have a 338-06 in a Remington pump that works great. I imagine the limiting factors would be if the barrel is thick enough to rebore to 416 caliber and the headspacing issue about having enough shoulder.

i would love for someone to do the r+d for this the browning blr is more suited for this project. some have expressed concern of the rifle holding up and bolt thrust ect. find a smith that has done the conversion before. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. wellllll.... Remington did/does make the pump in 35 Whelen for the Alaskan crowd, they find it very effective in the puckerbrush. And, I have seen two re-bored and rifled and re-chambered in 375 Brown-Whelen built for a couple emigrating up there several years back. Rich

Thanks for the responces. Sound like another project..... You know it would go to africal quite well. not an auto but quick follow up just the same. There could be serious issues with the stock holding up to that pounding. Sounds like it might be a lot of fun though. That idea should work quite well if you properly steel bed the stock maybe even crossbolt it. I'm not actually that familiar with the pump guns so can't comment more. As for the 400 Brown whelen headspace myth, its pure BS. I've built two of them and if you can change the headspace with the bolt you must be a relative of king Kong! Not gonna happen. Give it a try and let us know how it comes out.-Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

The 760/7600 will hold a 400W just fine but... the stock isn't really set up for recoil and the gun is a bit light. Just get ready for a little whack on both ends. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

IF the .400 Whelen chamber is cut with a .454"-.455" shoulder diameter (as the original ones were), there is no headspacing issue. It is only when the chamber is cut at the standard .30/'06 (.436") shoulder diameter that there is not enough of it..... "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."
