Can this be adjusted on a CZ easily? Is it adjustable on a Ruger? Out of habit I've taught my wife to always push a cartridge down into the magazine with a control-feed rifle.

Jims response above probably says it better than I can -but,

The true Mauser has a square lip on the extractor, as opposed to the beveled one on a Springfield or Winchester. i have seen many Mausers modified with a bevel that allow the extractor to slip over the case rim but you would need to talk to one of the experts here--Jim Kobe, RIP,Toomany tools etc to find out how effective and if there are any downsides to doing the bevel on a Mauser. The Coned breach is set up for it and the Square Mauser is,nt, so I don't know what long term usage is on the modification--the only hunting Mauser I use is a commercial FN action in 416 RM that isn NOT properly beveled.

Thats part of the reason I replaced it with my 416 B&M M-70.

Sean, Tanz,

A quality gunsmith can bevel the edge of the Mauser or CZ extractor without ruining the temper and it'll work likely for more years than we'll be alive.

If you're worried about the life of the modified extractor - at least for the Mauser new, ones occasionally are offered on the market.

If you can't find a new one, purchase a couple of military ones, have them modified and properly fitted for your cartridge of choice. If one eventually breaks you'll have a couple of backups.

Tanz, in the CZ you can usually load a cartridge in the chamber, then help the extractor over the rim by pressing the blade against the bolt body while closing. This will flex the extractor and open the lip away from the bolt.

Thanks--
that is a good reason for getting into an automatic, non-thinking habit of always punching a cartridge down into the magazine.
