parusing guns and ammo while the wife "gathered" food at the grocery store i read the boddington article on kimbers std. and regular belted mag length action rifle. to my delight i read that according to boddington the new 8400 is "technicaly long enough for 375 H+H magnum length cartridges" jumping

now this changes everything...

why buy overpriced mod 70 375 h+h rifles???

light, but it can do i ass u me rum carts 404 jeffery 416 rem and 458 lott ect???

being they make a syntnhetic stainless is a big plus for us stainless freaks too.

the retail is $1200 so figure 1500 with all smithing to a big bore?

the 338 win mag gets 4 down if i read it right.

what say you?

I've never looked at a Kimber rifle, they are not sold in Europe as far as I know. But it would certainly be interesting for them to make their rifle chambered for a few large bore cartridges; say 375 H&H and 458 Lott to begin with. Has anyone ever used a Kimber action to build a big bore?

Why not get a short action Kimber in a WSM caliber and put a .375 WSM barrel on it? Much cheaper than all the magazine work for the above, I'd guess. I'm sure some folks here have already done this or something similar. I think PacNor will put on a stainless barrel for less than $400.

Wink: its beeing imported here in norway.

But, if I where you, I would try to buy it in the states because here they up the price by $800 for importing it.

Boomstick, one could try to contact the firm, and ask if one could buy the action seperatly. Beacuse, now you have to buy a new barrel, could keep the stock, but would be one mean sob to shoot.

Do you know if there are any after market stock for the kimber?

Could anybody try to phone them, and ask if they sell actions seperatly? Could get an answer quiker then sending e-mails..

Yes the 8400 Kimber could take the 375 H&H.

I heard a rumor that a big bore or Express Kimber was in the works.

I will leave that to others to follow up on.

I saw the wood stocked Kimber recently on a trip to St Louis along with my good friend Mark and it was very nicely finished though, to my hands, the Montana that I had handled earlier felt a lot better. It would be interesting to see how the new long action ones come out. I always wanted a nice 30-06 and shall buy one, hopefully in the not too distant future. They are beautiful guns.

If you do buy one be sure to ask for the Circassian upgrade. In the standard actions this amounts to less than $50 and the wood is terrific. I looked at a couple this weekend and they were very well put together.

What ever happened to the Kimber 89 Big Game and 89 African?

They looked like superb rifles...
How is the 8400 action different, I have never seen either in real life, only photos..

For some reason I've never associated Kimber with the big bore community. Actually to tell you the truth I've never even seen one! Has anyone tried this?

These Kimbers are wonderful rifles with favorable quality/price ratio. thumb
Ole Kimber of OR made limited run (1 year worth, or so) of "Tropical Variety", they command pretty penny today, well above the original MSRP. Wink

I have a kimber montana in 308. Absolutely awesome bang for the buck. I painted mine with rustolem becaues I hate stainless rifles. If you big bored a kimber you would have one of the best of the best. Why not take a 7 or 300 mag and make it into a 416 taylor? It might be perfection!!

I haven't seen one, but the recent American Rifleman article indicated that the bolt head was a seperate piece from the bolt body. Eeker

Not sure how the head and body are joined, but I hope it is secure. This cost saving measure baffles me when Howa has been making an excellent one piece bolt on a very inexpensive rifle for years.

The bolt bodies on Kimber 84M and 8400's are one piece made from bar stock. The bolt handles are screwed into the bolt bodies.

The Savage and Remington bolt bodies are two piece.
