I'm having a Ruger #1 rechambered as soon as I can make up my mind what I want. In the above caliber, can I form the case from .375H&H brass? What would it entail? I'd like to practice with the formed brass and save the headstamped stuff for Africa. Would a 24 inch barrel be optimum for plains game? Since it's a .411 bullet, it fits in my collection. Thanks.

Well I did them for 416 Remington. The 416 bullet abouttakes out the 375 H&H shoulder and you finish with something (before firing) that lloks kind of like a 458 Lott with more taper.

I worked up reduced loads that were at about 2100 with 400 grain bullets, from memory I used the old Re 12 powder, adn the load shot well and to the same point from both necked up new 375 H&H cases, the same cases after firing and also 416 Rem brass which I got from firing off 40 416 Rem ractory rounds.

Full power loads are different simply because the powder charge will not fit ino a necked up 375 case....until it has been fired.

if you are using a ruger # 1...do the 450-400!!! a suuuuuper classic! p.s. i love the 411 almost as much as you.

#1's were made for rimmed carts.

if you were doing a bolt i would say the 400 h+h.

or my personal favorite the rimless 450-400 or the original bolt action dg cart preceeding the 404 jeffery.

I believe that Ruger's 400 Jeffery will shoot bullets that are .410 caliber. There are lots of .411 bullets available. I'm looking forward to seeing the Hornady Brass and bullets!

Or even easier, make them from .458 Lott cases. It is always easyer to neck down than up, and the Lott does not have the shoulder to produce do-nuts etc. Just FL-size them and you are ready to go with full power loads.

I am in the process of building a 400 H&H on a Model 70 Pre-64 action. I have already loaded several rounds and it is a simple process to run the 400 H&H resizing die over the 375 H&H brass. I plan to shoot .410 hangun bullets loaded with Unique to fire-from the cases to my Chamber. C&H has the dies at resonable prices. Also, he included an extra expander ball to ease the process of opening up the mouth and neck. Good luck in your project!

I am also wanting to build a 400 H&H. would you load ammo for me. I do not have any reloading equipment. A house fire took me out of the reloading business. You should have heard some of the comments from fire fighters.

The .450/.400 (or .400 Jeffery) and the .400 H&H use the same bullet, and I think in the Ruger #1 I would go for the rimmed cartridge just because. Hornady is making ammo now, so it will be easy and cheap (relative to H&H) to get.

In a magazine rifle I would go with the .400 H&H. I have a box of .400 Pondoro from A-Square. I expect that headstamp would work in Africa, maybe for sure!

I
I just had finished a 400 H&H on a Remington Model 30S and I use my old 416 Remington brass. Superior has headstamped brass when you need it.

I think I would use 458 Lott brass too, if I were to go out and buy new practice brass. Necking up 375 brass takes a custom-ground expander or two steps. Either way you'll need to trim it back some.

Friday is my first day at the range. Quickload says 2350 fps with 74.0 grains of Rel 15 but the case is so close to straight, I think the velocity will fall off some from that.
