At least put a smiley on your post! Although the rifles of Safarikid, Bigdoggy700, RGB, ISS and others are mostly beyond both my financial and shooting means they are driving the ultra big bore market. This is both great reading/information for us mere big bore mortals (who say love a 458 Lott and want a 550 Mag or 600!) but pushes the action and riflemakers to actually produce functioning BIG rifles.
Anyone who loves bigger rifles should respect and relish the projects of our "cutting edge" members. Who doesn't like hearing about and seeing pics of outstanding rifles?
I love it.
John
There are those that do, those that dream, and those that only read about it and then post their "expertise" on AR!

This means a lot coming from the guy who chased and taunted a black bear on his ATV and was then surprised when the bear came to check him out and then was scared of the bear's "abnormal" behavior!!
Demoronical - you get the Bubba prize of the year so far except maybe the guy who thinks there's a 10,000 year storm coming over in the PF...

bigdoggy700I don't think Kid wants a 700 derringer. That would be too big and heavy for him. It might not kick enough. A 44 mag derringer with corbon's hot loads should suffice. I buried the hammer into the web of my hand about 15 years ago shooting mine one handed with the hot stuff. I know, I know, pretty dang stupid to do it one handed when you can only wrap one finger around the grip because it is so dang little. But what can I say, I was double dog dared!!

SAFARIKIDI DID have a 45/70 Alaskan series Derringer with 3"..Had it Magnaported too...No,it didnt help and Yes,it was a flamethrower...Great coversation piece or to shove in a Bears mouth before you die!

SAFARIKIDIt just depends on the season as he starts hunting soon too!...If he has all the parts in place,no time...sometimes getting barrels or stocks slows things down.... Give Mike a call...(He starting on a 500 Jeffery LW for me now!http://www.bijoucreek.com/

bigdoggy700Kid its too bad you will only remember shooting the first one. The one you shoot will knock you so silly, you won't remember shooting the second one. Seriously though, watch out for a brow cut with a scope!!

I still have a good laugh when I remember el jeffe saying, shoot real big bores with a scope and you'll be dodging a frontal labotamy, every time you pull the trigger!
Whenever I see SAFARIKIDS creations, I can't help but be reminded of that sage advice!

Michael RobinsonI have spent the last two months shooting 570 grain .510" caliber bullets at 2,500 fps in development of soft and solid loads that will strike the same point of aim at 50 and 100 yards.
I am not recoil sensitive, but my loads will rattle your molars in a twelve pound rifle. They are above all hunting loads and must be reliable, repeatable and manageable.
I can get off four rounds from the sticks and keep all of them in the black at 50 yards in well under ten seconds.
What the recovery time between shots must be for repeat shots with your beast, Kid, I neither know nor care to find out!

Simply AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For the man who can stand behind'em, it would be hard to dream of 2 better stopping rifles. The .458 Lott for Alaskan brownies & the .600 OK for African (or JURASSIC PARK) beasts...... SAFARIKID, I stand in awe and suffer from envy!!!!!

Congrats on the plentiful bounty of big bore beauties!

MacifejI don't know...I think the 600 should have a 10 round detachable mag...

30 round drum would be better, but then it would bring the weight up to "tolerable by a normal human" standard

SAFARIKIDWell, here it is folks, being tested by the builder! 4 minute video,a few short gaps, but check it out! Also,it weighed 8 1/2 pds when this was filmed, since then it ws reduced to 8 pds even w/o peep or scope...less than 9 pds scoped w/rings! Load is 145 Varget with Woodleighs at 2100fps as per chrony...this is in Colorado at 5000+ elevation, will be less at lower altitudes! We could load her faster, but dont feel the need...yet!

boom stickThat barrel was a bang flop!

Can't wait for the Savannah Big Bore Shoot

12 September 2008, 21:34
DemonicalI watched that video and it is certainly impressive.
A couple of questions: 1) what is the recoil calculation for the load fired in the video?
2) Who is firing the rifle?
12 September 2008, 23:55
SAFARIKIDMike the Gunsmith is firing the rifle(many times besides in the video) and I dont know about the recoil figures(dont want to know!)

900grains x 2100fps in 8 1/2pds=???

MINUS what the integral brake saves the shoulder...maybe 40%

"Shooter who is nuts!"
One program I have says Recoil velocity of 36.3fps and energy of 174.5 lbs. That with a 40% brake.

srshooterSAFARI, I've been trying to think of a rifle that's comparable (in weight to power ratio) "THE ROGUE 600 OK" but can't think of one. The closest thing I know of is Gary Reeder's "THE BEAST" Ruger No.1 in .500 A2 or .500 Jeffery. He might do one in .550 Magnum but I'm not sure. Either way, you've got'em all trumped with that 8 pound .600 OK!
The only other comparable rifle I know of is your own .500 Jeffery. Hell, you've got the most extreme revolvers too with your Sheriff's Model .500 Super & .50-110 !!!! Please tell me you're gonna use one of those BFR's as backup to THE ROGUE!?!? You're PH will shit himself!!

13 September 2008, 02:47
SAFARIKIDHa!

Yes,I got a few Unique ones

as does Bigdoggy...I figured a way if I spend another $700 on a new stock,etc to lighten my 458Lott from 5-3oz to 4-7oz(w/o scope)Do the math,600gr 458 at 2200?=Ouch

..I am working with Bigdoggy's man now on a 2 bore, going for the English African style,20" barrel,English features and under 20pds..Conical "projectiles" at heaven knows what speed

..Just another bazooka type shoulder cannon!

..Maybe Robogunbuilder can machine me some 5000 gr Copper Boreriders for it!Will be using Triple 7 instead of blackpowder so one can find where I landed quicker(no smoke)

jeffeossothose lead gloves? I haven't ever seen anyone shoot with jersey leathers before!!!
Gotta try the end on shot with a 550 express and the kodiak bullet!
wow, i am out of practice on my 550!
13 September 2008, 08:47
bigdoggy700On the rogue, 228 ft.lbs of recoil at 41 ft/sec. On the lightweight 458 Lott, 187 ft.lbs of recoil at a whopping 51 ft/sec. It is a good thing those muzzle brakes work so well!!
13 September 2008, 17:48
MississippianSafariKid, Does the Rogue have a Pacnor 3 groove?
Is the 145gr varget load approaching max? What charge should I start with in my rifle using varget and a 900gr woody?
Got any videos of the 458 Lott in action? What is its name? the "RUNT"

It sure is cute like one!

MississippianSafariKid, I couldnt wait any longer! I felt something between my legs and realized I did have a set of balls so I loaded up some Varget and went to my neighbors house

. As usual he was having his Sunday evening cocktail and his balls were much bigger than mine so I said,
ME-"hey buddy, you ever shot an elephant gun?" HEHE.
Him- (as he takes a sip of whiskey) Naw, cant be worse than my 45-70!
ME- Here you go,be sure and hold on tight! (As I retreat behind his truck!)
KABOOOM!!

I look out and determine that 145 grains of Varget behind a 900 gr woody is a safe load in my gun!

(who needs quickload!)
Now I set up the Chronograph and here are the results:
-Rifle used- AHR built on CZ, Just rebarreled with a 22" 9 groove.
-Oehler 35, at sealevel,80 deg slightly humid
-all loads are using 900 grain Woodleigh softs
1. For comparison I loaded some 4350 at 145 grains- 1866 fps, no brake. This is one of those loads one can "shoot all day".
2. Varget 145 grains with X brake- 2135fps. Not bad on recoil but obviously more than number 1
3. Varget 145 grains without X brake-2124 fps. Yes the X brake works and works good. I would not shoot this load all day.
Conclusion-Thanks Kid for the load!

Varget is one of my favorite/most used powders which I purchase by the keg. Hopefully further test will find it to be accurate as well!

SAFARIKIDFirst,My PACNOR is the Conventional rifling, not the 3 groove(they told us they went back to conventional?)....Next,Missisippian,glad you liked it(Luv how you got the guinne pig to shoot it

)What is Your barrel length and altitude? Mine is 16"(!) and tested at 5200'...We are going to 150 Varget on some new 900gr Copper and 860gr Brass Boreriders by Rob!..Maybe 2200 from my lil cannon?!

..Maybe next Sunday you can try that load and chrony it for us!

...PS.Howz the neighbor doing
