Safarikid, did you scope your .500 Jeffery and, if so, what scope did you select?

Yes I did...a Leupold VX-III 1.5-5x20mm..#4 CH...Worked great and has long relief,so I dont get scoped!...LOw power is great for Close shots and 5x brings em' in for 100yd or more stuff...But,I may rescoppe next week with a 2-7x33 Euro 30mm as it may be a lil better for longer shots and this baby only drops 8" at 200yds...I like it ALOT and so did the PHs! It carried so well in the African HEAT! (4 bore was toted along by my angry gunbearer!) Dad was right,go to college son! LOL!

Damage was severe and off shoulder holes were not as bad as I thought, but skin did cover most of it back up..I wish I would have taken pics of that and the insides!..Pics coming thanks to Boomstick!

Great pics safari kid. When I asked about shoulder damage, I was being facitious and actually asking about the damage done to your shoulders from the recoil of those bad boys.

Thanks...Shoulder damge report-None...Wallet damage report-I am in great pain now!Smiler....Actually,the lil 500 kicks much less than the 600?!It is almost 4 pds lighter scoped than the 600 is scoped, but has integral brake that must really work!..The 4 bore pushes/shoves you around, but doesnt hurt me..The 600 without scope is like a sucker punch, but I like it Smiler !! with scope and break on,its a wimp..We shall we what my 10-11pd .700 shall be like soon!

Aren't those the exit wounds on the backside of the trophy tree?

That is one tough tree though. Umbrella thorn? Leadwood?

It will survive to provide more sighting tests for future Bwanas ... or it will provide excellent firewood for sundowners in camp.

Thanks for sharing the pics. thumb

Nice buff...and we all admire your weapons of choice. I agree that a properly built muzzle brake makes a huge difference in felt recoil. Thanks for sharing your safari notes.

THANKS ROB!...I used 570Xs in the .500 Jeffery and 900"X's" in the .600,booth at 2200fps and both rounds blew through both shoulders of "dadeadbuffs"!..One fell in his tracks and the other ran a short distance, dead on his feet! Both were one shotters, but PH demanded "insurance follow ups"..The X bullets for the .600 are made by AHR now and I like them alot, they are Spitzers and feed fine and also, they dont deform from recoil in the magazine like Woodleighs and other lead nose rounds!

Safari Kid- You are a tougher man than I. I draw the recoil line at the 458 Lott. My 470 is right at the edge of my comfortable range. I imagine a 600 or 700 would give me a 9 month migraine.

Part of the bullet design was to be tough as hell!
able to go fast without losing petals or overexpanding for a hybrid solid/expanding bullet able to go snooter to tooter and break any bone in between. it is an alloy not solid copper.

Very good looking Bullets. About optimum for the .600OK. I'd love to see how they would expand at 2300fps. I'd imagine that level of recoil in such a light gun would be horendous though. Well you still carry it far longer bthan nyou shoot it.-Rob

SafariKid,

Great hunt...Congratulations!

You mentioned the PHs liked your rifle. Did they get a chance to shoot it or did they just like the weight and it's "Buffalo Hammer Factor"...? Smiler

I understand you were video taping your safari for a Big Bore Buff hunt DVD. What is the status of your project?

Best Regards,
Dave

Yes,they shot them and were afraid of the 4 bore most, but its just a big shove thanks to its 26pd plus weight...The 600 was shot wihout scope on (9.5pds!)No break and it kicked the snott out of Wayne(literally)his hand came off and smacked his nose,we all got a good laugh(but him)...the lil 500 pleasantly suprised everone as it kicks the least!? those 3 slots each side apparently makes a big difference as we are shooting 570s at 2200 in a Light gun!...Yes,we have alot of footage on the trip that is being edited now,but not enough for my plans Frowner I am now thinking of making it into a "Buffalo Bonanza" flic and will combine other footage with Big bores of my past Safaris, more to be taken this winter of a bunch of Bison with the 4 bore,700 and 50/110 handgun, plus a friends double 600 and whatever else I can think of?,maybe some Water buff at the Brady Ranch in Fla too? We'll see....
