jeffeossoAR round updates and 2 dilemmas
Well Howdy there Fellas
Yesterday I fireformed the first 416 and 458 AR round.
They look kinda like a short rigby and a scled 500 jeffe!! Really neat rounds. Should be firing loaded rounds, thugh not for any laod dev (probably) before the end of the year. If I do that on 12/31, it will be 80 days from start to shoot on this project, and I want to thank EVERYONE for their support.
Dilemma 1:
and yep, BB was right... Overall Length ...
the 416, at 2.65 case, comes out 2.45ish.. But the neck is actually overly long.
I am thinking I will make the necks shorter, to allow for a 2.35 OAL.
Yes, I realise people have a theoritical issues with the 300 win and 500 jeffe having "short necks" .... but I've never seen WHY, as neither round has a rep for bullets slipping back into the shell.
This will lead to a "misleading" case capacities, though, as the bullets wont eat as much case ... just like the 300 win.
Dilemma 2
470 AR headspace ... yep, it's more than any "mouth" headspacing, and certainly more than a belted HH case.. but only just..
I'll make this up and we'll have it... BUT .. that one might get a redesign off a shorted weatherby case... future item.
I hope to have all three flinging lead before the end of the year

gixxerSounds like trying to keep with the cheap brass for the 470 might be a prob. You gonna get some 460 WBY brass and resize? Guess the Rigby(or Dakota) brass could get the nod too. If you used Rigby brass, it could be like a short 470 MBOGO!! Just kidding.

boom stickre 470...is it put off and the 416 and 458 getting the fast track?
is the 470 still doable on the rum brass?

Boomstick,
If you'll read my posts, you'll generally find there's more facts and answered questions than unanswered one

Gixxer,
I'll give the 470 on rum a try... why not? I bought the barrel and dies, so I might as well finish the job.. AND weatherby brass will clean up the chamber
If it doesn't work, you know, there's no practical difference in the 470 and 458... and the 458 has cheaper bullets....
besides, that barrel can always become a true mbogo.

Hog Killerjeffe, bring them to the "Bubba Home Range", Friday if you want to bust some caps with the AR rounds. I have already run the grinder and will only need to smoke the sausage tomorrow.

Bill/OregonCan't wait to see chrono and pressure figures on the .416. Does one of the Band of Bubbas have a strain gauge?
There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t.

Bwana-beIf alternate cases are getting considered, into what action would they be chambered? We still talking Ruger?
I've wanted for a while to do my 470-416 Rigby x 2.3" design, dubbed 12mm Maus or 470 Mbogo Mdogo (3.1" COL) on a Winchester M70 SA.
If someone does a 3.3" one, I'll have a little more confidence in the action....

boom stickhey jeffeosso...

Frank MartinezJeffe, sorry I missed you the other day but this is "crazy Season" for me and my bid'ness. I would love to have you chrono my rifle while you are testing it along with getting everyone else to offer opinions on shooting the rifle. I hope that works out. If not I will just have to wait a little longer.
I have already set aside another action and two more barrels for the next step up as you complete your development.
Thanks for the added information.
Have a great Holiday.

BB,
Sounds like a fine round, but I would do it 2.5" ... it's only $230 for the reamer, and I'll kick in if you want to do it like I am doing .. sending it to pacnor once proved.
I, like doing a 404 AR... won't be using Rigby brass. It's excellent, but it reminds me of a kitcar I once saw... yeah, it looked AWEESOME, handled excellent, AC, CD, Cruise control....
and it just required a vette from 2 years prior to start from.

SnowwolfeForgive me for my ignorance. But isnt the 450 AR supposed to be based on the RUM case?
My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Yes, all of the AR rounds are.. I was saying that i would NOT be using rigby brass.

gixxerYes, detailed pics of carts would be KICKASS.

Bwana-beYeah, gotcha Jeff, you mentioned the Wby case for the 470. You do it in a standard action and I'll be all ears to see how it works out. I know folks have made a number of 338 LM on M700's, so it should handle the case size at sub-pressures.
Of course 2.5" would be bigger/better/more, but I just have this thing, you see. And I'm not trying to make a DG gun, just a Bwana-be DG gun, sort of a DG Jr.

If you mean that you need a Rigby-sized action, I should mention I'm planning on using a SA M70 for it. Winchester has the 416 R as an available custom chambering, so at least they and their lawyers stand behind the action at those pressures.
Looks like at 3.1" I should be able to get a 500g to go 2350 and a theoretical 425g about 2550 from a 24" bbl and about 45kCUP. Just perfect for whitetail and 55g drums.
