I'll add one more equation:

.475" diameter bullet of 475 grains @ approximately 2,100 fps = Legitimate, Bona Fide Dangerous Game Cartridge

That combo would be my personal choice in this new round. It would get the job done even under less than ideal conditions, I would think.

Talked with Mike and I sent a drawing of what I need for a 475gr. bullet to work and feed. The OAL will be +- 1.320" The cartridge OAL will be 2.8" so it will feed properly. I believe with what I know about this cartridge that I will be able to active the 2100FPS that you are looking for. Making it a

Doug do you think that it would function in one of these?

I don't have a clue. I stay away from these modern actions.

Big Grin thumb That would be terrific. I love lever actions. And DG rifles. But seldom, if ever, have the 'twain admixed.

My tastes run to Marlins in .45-70 (I know, I know) and Savages in .308, but you are making that '86 look mighty interesting as a true DG rifle. Way better than the much vaunted '95 in .405.

I'm curious to know if you've had any problems holding the fore end in place given the recoil. Did you modify the fore end cap hanger or increase the screw size through the cap? After a lot of heavy loads with a 280 grain cast bullet in my 348 I have managed to pull the forend cap screws out a couple of times and even the fore end cross tenon that dovetails into the barrel has bent slightly. All repairable but not really a great system. Would like to know if you've found a better method of holding it all together.

Again I do not do Bolt Guns! Find some one that is familiar with them. NOT ME!

As for the forends. We install a new tennon, set it deeper, larger screws. The mag tubes are either screwed in like on the 71's, or have a screw at the end into the barrel with lip. We will also be doing Marlin type end caps that the stud will be silver soldered in palce.
The rifle that I hunted and used for testing was converted to a full thread take down is the same TD ring as an original. I had them made up and we fit magazine tubes to each one. That rifle has had about 1200 rnds through it with out any problem. Taken of three hunts and in all sort of weather.

Thank you for that detail. A different end cap with a lug that fits into the barrel would work well with most 71's. Do I understand you to mean that the end cap is also screwed into the end of the tube as well as the tube screwed into the receiver (as on the 71's)?

The end cap is not threaded into the tube just the mag tube into the receiver, 71 and some of the Jap guns are this way.

Might I inquire as to the cost of a '71 or '86 conversion to the 475? Thanks.

To take your rifle, diss, do internal alterations, FE hanger, rebore to .475, rechamber, recaliber mark, reblue barrel, reassemble costs $900
Model 71 add $100 as we put 86 carriers into them to aid in the feeding. This does not include changing the barrel, but using the existing barrel and wood. We can put octagon barrels and wood on if you want to change your rifle from round to oct or part oct/rnd.
I have RCBS $275 or Hornady $225 dies in stock, includes shell holder. Brass can be made from 50-110 cases. I have brass formed and trimmed to length for $1.50 each.
I have a few guns done in stock ready to go. Both Browning and USRAC rifles. I also have another group out getting rebored and expect to have them back in 30 days. Twist rate is 1-18. You can take a EXTLW USRAC, take downs, standard rifles and rebore them out to 475.

man, Doug's got something great here, sort of like a 450 alaskan at 470 (boomy, we know you thought about that, too Smiler ) ..

if you want a 470 in a boltgun, without a huge issue, do the 470 AR ... in fact, that siamese in the 470 or 458 AR (if it will take a 3.35") would be perfect ..

nice siamese, btw.. slip down to houston if you want to shoot the 470

Hey, there is something at least as frightening out there. It's called 510 Kodiak Express. Check out '5000 Foot Pounds of Muzzle Energy from a Marlin! The 510 Kodiak Express' by M.L. McPherson in Nov. 2007 Precision Shooting Mag.
I was just after Arthur W. Savage- Part II article when I noticed article about that monstrosity.

Yes there is but there is no SD with the bullets that you would use in the 510 Kodiak Express. So by the panel it is no good for DG. It just beats you up. Unlike the 475 Turnbull that has the SD and performance if you want to shoot them that fast and hard.

Well now the wait starts,my just bought Win 71 mfg 1937 has arrived at Turnbull Restorations,I really liked the idea of a 475 in a lever action, now I will have a gun to go along with my 470NE & 475Linebaugh!
I think it will be very conveinient shooting the same sized bullets out of these three guns & to have a gun with such history as the 71 was just too much to resist Big Grin
The guys at Turnbull's were very easy to work with, great service, they actually shipped a finished rifle to my FFL for an inspection,I was able to handle it & check it out,it was a delight, very comfortable weight,& very natural coming to the shoulder, cycling the lever was just too slick!
