Very cool, I'll have a drink to that before I hit the sack tonight. Is that rifle still around by chance? I haven't seen any pictures of a 425 in a long time on here. Thanks for the great post, Jens. The 425 WR has long been near the top of my list of the so-called nostalgia cartridges. Husky, I agree. But such behavior makes it easy to know whom to put on the Ignore list. _________________________ Glenn

You know, if you have a need for striper clips in a rifle like that, Your day must have gotten very interesting. Cheers, John Give me COFFEE and nobody gets hurt

The 425WR is one of my faves too. I would be wary of turning my own cases from 404 brass though. Too much risk in thinning the case at the base while cutting the angle in for the rebate. While reloading for my 425, I fortunately noticed that about 50% of my HDS cases have a little crack running around the case right on the cut ahead of the rim. And they were made by professionals! No way would I try that! Other than that, with good brass and good bullets, the 425 is right up there with the best of them. A total classic which, apparently, some just have no appreciation for.

"Stampeeeede!" This isn't a project that I'd want to get involved with, but apparently it's possible to make .425 WR from .460 Weatherby cases: http://www.ammo-one.com/425WR.html _________________________ Glenn

Right. And QC's price is pretty good considering the .425 is an obsolete British round. About $3 per single case. I'd much rather go that route than with a lathed-down .460 W'by. _________________________ Glenn

Also FYI, Hawk Precision has a nice variety of RN bullets for this caliber from 300 grains up to 450 grains. Of course, Hawk has practically anything you can think of! http://www.hawkbullets.com/Pricelist.htm _________________________ Glenn

Great posts Jens. What a rifle! I love the drop box "Enfield" looking magazine but my word how long is that barrel. ____________________________________________ "If a man can't trust himself to carry a loaded rifle out of camp without risk of shooting somebody, then he has no business ever handling a rifle at all and should take up golf or tennis instead." I've been keen to lay my hands on a pair of 425 compatible stripper clips for some time now. I'm sure they are readily available too. Great when amongst Elephant. Non Trophy Ele along with Merkel470NE & Westley Richards 425M;

Oz, you should be able to use regular clips from the 8mm Mauser to load three shells. Will that work?

Love the stripper clips. Next big bore I have built will have a slot in the receiver -- never thought of it honestly.

Oz, as Huvius has indicated regular 8mm stripper clips for the Mauser 98 will work. They can hold 4 cartidges of the 425WR round. Robert

Question Was the 425 WR meant to be a single stack feed and not staggered? 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

Not a great photo, but the above is a 425 WR made by Westley Richards that belongs to PH Grant Taylor. ____________________________ If you died tomorrow, what would you have done today ... 2018 Zimbabwe - Tuskless w/ Nengasha Safaris 2011 Mozambique - Buffalo w/ Mashambanzou Safaris

Would be great to see more pics of that rifle. Is it a staggered feed or in line single stack feed? 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

A stripper clip seems like a very good idea for a DG rifle - may not really be needed, but, unless it'd make things considerably more complicated, it seems like a great means of reloading... boom stick, Westley Richards used regular magazin boxes of military and commercial rifles. In some cases as you can see on my rifle, a custom made extention for a total of 5 rounds in the magazine was attached. In some way the cartridges are staggered as much as the the narrow magazine box allow. fla3006 and Big Bore Fan, thanks for the comment. At the time I have taken the picture, together with the stripper clip, the gun was still in the white. Today the receiver it is color case hardened and the magazine box is blued. Robert Robert

Thanks for the reply. It is my understanding that a large rebate can be tough to get feed in a staggered feed magazine but if in line it feeds better. If one were to add to the mag well to make it feed in line maybe the rebate issue will become negligeable. In a stock mag well i dont think there would be much staggering. I have a dummy round made from rum brass and like the design better with no or little rebate. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S.
