Convert M70 .300 RUM to .458 Lott
I have been told that the action length on the newer M70 in .300 RUM, Weatherby or 7MM STW is appropriate for a simple conversion to a .458 Lott.

And that this is simpler than converting a M70 in .458 WM to .458 Lott.

Is this a true and accurate statement?

Thanks

True; you can also convert to .404J or one of the AR rounds.

Not true. They are the same length action.

I've currently got a M70 in 300RUM at Pac-Nor being rebarreled to 404 Jeff.

Part of my thinking (possibly flawed as I am not a gunsmith, and relatively new to big bores) was that the 300RUM is a fairly easy coversion to 404 Jeffrey in a M70, and that 458 Lott can be easily done on more available m70's, while the 404 can have lots of feeding problems when other donor actions are used.

Another part of my thinking is that I want to stick with one action: M70.(I have them in 300 WinMag, and 375 H&H.)

Caleb the RUM action is the same as the H&H, STW etc so is an easy conversion to 458 Lott. I like you thinking and should have my Capstick back from Pacnor in a week or so on a formally RUM action model 70. My 3 70s will then be 06, 375 H&H, and 470 Capstick (no pinky waving calibers here Wink )

Well,
My greatest contribution to AR.com must be the "extended pinky finger" line that my young protege has picked up. Apparently the line is made sweeter for George when boom stick kisses up by telling George he has "taste and class."

The 300 RUM M70 to 404 Jeffery is attractive, as many here have found, due to the windowed box and flat spring and feed ramp and rail geometry that allows 3 down in the box and successful feeding of the rebated RUM case. If it works there, it is a cinch for the slick 404 Jeffery of slightly lesser body diameter, as many here have found.

Please, Please, Please don't waste the oportunity to mate the "perfect" action to the "perfect" conversion -- that being .300 RUM to 404 Jeffery. Lord, I wish I had had enough sense to start with a RUM, rather than a .375 H&H, to build my 404.

Anything the Lott will kill, so will the 404, only with more style, dignity and sense of tradition. Wink

to pile on...
the m70 rum to 404 is, to me, the preferred use of both. "any ole" model 70 caan be made into a 458 lott, and purchased for less than the conversion.

my advice? either do a 404 on it (not what *I* would) or sell it and get a lott
