You can't see the gun too well in this pic, but here we are a few months ago in Tanzania. I'm holding my Beretta 455 in a .470NE.

NE 450 No2,

It was a side brain shot that did her in. Absolutely no issues with the rifle. Perfect, flawless function.

Now another question. One of the elephants I shot, also a side brain, at 12 yards, fell on her brisket same as yours. My shot was at a slight angle and penetrated the back of the brain, exiting the brain cavity busting one of the smooth ball joint bones on the atlas and the axis, ie penetrating the medula oblongata.
Do you know if your shot did the same?

Nice rifles, gentlemen...almost has me contemplating selling some of my bolt-action trash and purchasing a shiny new-to-me double rifle! Naaawww, I snapped out of it...I'll use that money for my next trip over the big briney!

Seriously, great rifles and excellent trophies!

NE 450 No2,

This side brain shot was at an angle from the rear and entered at the seven O'clock position right at the ear hole on the side facing the camera. The bullet exited about four inches in front of the opposite earhole IIRC. I was shooting from a rock outcropping and my rifle was about at the level of the earhole.

An insurance side brain shot was taken from the side opposite the camera and went in about an inch below the ear hole and exited about three inches below and four or five inches forward of the earhole, again IIRC. I was shooting from the sand for the insurance shot so was shooting downward toward her ear from about ten yards.

I shot another elephant with a frontal brain shot that was two inches too high. This shot was taken at a slight angle when the elephant was looking at my PH about six feet or so to my right. The bullet entered maybe two inches on my side of center and exited just where the head joins the neck on the opposite side. The shot knocked her out cold and she dropped like a ton a bricks and never moved again but an insurance heart shot is likely what actually killed her.

I will try to post a photo of the second elephant but I need to load it into photobucket.

I like those William Douglas guns.

I don't guess anyone is having them made anymore since Don Shrum of Cape Outfitters passed away?

500 grains,

You're not the only one going after scrum caps. This is a picture of my cape buff with a 24" spread taken with the Lancaster 450/400. This old bull had a huge body but both horns busted off. Even with no horns, the hard stalk & good shot/clean kill made this one of my most memorable trophies!

The shop in Staffordshire that made them went out of business in 2003. It was a 1-2 man operation and the owner shut down after a devorce.

You see them every now and then usually selling for 9-12K. Good, solid, english pattern gun for a reasonable price.

I wasn't going to post until I returned from Zim (I'm on my way Sunday on a PAC elephant hunt and will fly the aluminum sardine can with .450NE#2), but since most of the pictures were with DG doubles, I thought I'd post this one. It's a Cogswell & Harrison .375 2 1/2" which Frank Beller now owns. It shoots a .375 270 grain bullet at about 2000 fps. I took it on a plains game hunt in 2004 and it made every hunt a real challenge to get close (you can see the open plains in the background). If you ever think you're getting "bored" with non-DG hunting, get a smaller caliber double and have at it. It will "spice-up" you hunt a great deal.

JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

Marrakai,

Nice rifle and I thoroughly enjoyed your buff hunt story.

Have you decided what to do to get those excellent groups to print lower at 50 meters yet?

I aim low!

Seriously, I am on the trail of a taller front sight, but it might not be tall enough to put me on the money at 50 to 80 yds (the average shot here-abouts). I may have to make one, a job which I'm putting off because although not particularly difficult, will be fiddly.

Here's another one of my doubles, a Jeffery .400 'Maharajah Gun', also with free hunting story!
