I just asked for a quote on a .416 ruger chamber reamer....same shoulder angle and headspace gauge as the .375 Ruger and throated as if it was a 416 Taylor.

Anyone with a software program can forecast the velocity of a 400 grain bullet at 65,000 PSI?

or should I change it to a .423 Ruger?

Opinions?

Vapodog,

24" barrel
400 gr Hornady Interbond bullet
COL 3.34"
Max avg pressure: 65,000 psi

IMR4064 gets you 2410 fps
IMR4320 gets you 2438 fps
Rel 15 gets you 2456 fps
Varget gets you 2420 fps
H380 gets upi 2450 fps
Ramshot "Big Game" gets you 2480 fps
VN140 gets you 2370 fps
VN540 gets you 2395 fps
W748 gets you 2440 fps
W760 gets you 2500 fps

Hope that helps.

that's cool, 416 Remington/Rigby factory velocities in a std length action. Kinda makes a guy wonder how an 8mm or 338 would do.

Blown primer with a charging buffalo is fine as long as it was pointed right when the primer blew. Cool

I'm not familiar with all the US powders ScottS mentions but I think N140 is too fast for this cartridge/bullet weight. Wouldn't N160 be a better choice? Could you get enough in the case?

Bullalo charging, stuck case. Thats when you want the Rem. or Rigby so your spear/club is 1/2 longer.

Temperature simulation was set at 70 F.

Wink, N160 is too slow. N140 is the appropriate powder, as far as, the simulation software is concerned. Wink

It appears a 416 Ruger will do precisely what it should from a case capacity viewpoint. It falls between the 416 Taylor and the 416 Remington magnum. Personally, if I wanted a 3.34" COL wildcat I would opt for the 416 Howell as it will extactly duplicate the 416 Remington magnum. If desired I can rerun the simulation with a, how shall I say it, more reasonable pressure of 55,000 psi.

I am no expert on chamber pressures but I believe barrel diameter constricts in cold weather and may have the same effect if not worse than a hot round fired from a very hot barrel on a very hot day.The first shot fired from a cold barrel causes very high chamber pressures in my oppinion.Just to get an idea of the bore diameter on a cold day,try passing a patch down the barrel and feel how tight it is.I got a stuck bolt with a blown primer and deformed case head when I tried to fire a round from a cold barrel that usually worked fine when fired from a warm barrel.

Wink,

For the record here are the results with a HIGHLY compressed load of VN160.

24" barrel
400 gr Hornady Interbond bullet
COL 3.34"
Max avg pressure: 65,000 psi

VN160 gets you 2180 fps (pressure ~ 48 ksi).

With the max avg pressure set to 55,000 psi, 400 gr Hornady Interbond bullet, a 24" barrel the 416 Ruger gets:

2300 fps with IMR 4064
2320 fps with IMR 4320
2340 fps with Rel 15
2370 fps with Ramshot "Big Game"

For comparitive purpose the 416 Remington Magnum get the following with the same bullet and barrel length,

2400 fps with Ramshot "Big Game" @ 55 ksi
2515 fps with Ramshot "Big Game" @ 65 ksi

2370 fps with Rel 15 @ 55 ksi
2490 fps with Rel 15 @ 65 ksi

2330 fps with IMR4064 @ 55 ksi
2445 fps with IMR4064 @ 65 ksi

2357 fps with IMR4320 @ 55 ksi
2471 fps with IMR4320 @ 65 ksi

The 416 Howell with the same bullet and 24" barrel:

2340fps with IMR4064 @ 55 ksi
2450fps with IMR4064 @ 65 ksi

2364 fps with IMR4320 @ 55 ksi
2477 fps with IMR4320 @ 65 ksi

2406 fps with Ramshot "Big Game" @ 55 ksi
2520 fps with Ramshot "Big Game" @ 65 ksi

2380 fps with Rel 15 @ 55 ksi
2495 fps with Rel 15 @ 65 ksi

Trust me the Taylor runs in the low 2300's at Max pressure (63.8 ksi).

400 gr @ 2300 is all you need, the rest is just trying to make it into a rigby which it aint... yes 400@ 2400 is a benchmark and it could do it but at what cost in preasure and recoil???
411, 416 and 423...just do 50,000psi and use premium bullets. the better question is what will it do at 45,000, 50,000 and 55,000 psi imho

the 416 ruger might be a factory round next year if the rumors hold so if you are going through the trouble, might as well do one they wont do and if you do a 411 or 423 nobody will say (pinky extended) "well it is supposed to do 2400 like the rigby"

another good thing is the 423 and 411 bullets are designed to open up at lower velocities.

besides...the 416 a.r. is better for preasure/case volume

in other words...423 ruger and you can keep your pinky extended down to 2150 Big Grin

and the 411 if you want to shoot cheap at the range

BS,

As I posted above this is what the 416 Ruger, as described by Vapodog, will do at 55,000 psi max average chamber pressure:

quote:
With the max avg pressure set to 55,000 psi, 400 gr Hornady Interbond bullet, a 24" barrel the 416 Ruger gets:

2300 fps with IMR 4064
2320 fps with IMR 4320
2340 fps with Rel 15
2370 fps with Ramshot "Big Game"

By 416 AR I assume you are referring to a reinvented 416 Howell.

At 55,000 PSI this is a reasonable round for sure.
