600 Overkill600 Overkill takes a big boar
Here a couple of pics from my hunt last week. This monster weighed 480 lbs & was an old scarred beast. He took 1 round with a 900gr Woodleigh. I don't have time right now, but will post details & observations later after the Packers beat the Giants :-)

RIPThat is a HOG! Beer can sized hole through it?
I suspect the bristles are concealing it.
20 January 2008, 21:24
600 OverkillTo give an idea how big this little guy was, I'm 6'6" 285. Look at it compared to me

The Woodleigh hit him 2/3 up from the bottom right behind the right shoulder in the middle of his massive gristle plate, pulverized the inurds and STOPPED under the offside plate & DIDN'T EXIT. Time for the Kodiaks of X-style

trophyhunter5000Way to go Joe!
That's an awesome boar!
How far did he go after the shot?
Sounds like that is "par for the course" performance for the Woodleigh softs in the 600OK...
Betcha the Kodiaks would have exited with a nice big ol hole...

CCMDocHoly mackeral !!! That's a lot of bacon!
I definitely want to see more of the beast and of the bullet that took him as well as the story that went into his taking.
As I wait for AHR to build my 600 OK (Granite Mountain action, 26" barrel, upgraded wood and fancy checkering), I have been searching the AR archives for anything and all on loads for the 600 OK, photos of the rifle and bullets and pics of the game taken. Ed mentioned that he put some "stuff in the mail" to me - I am hoping dies and components to whet my whistle while I wait.
Looking forward to the story and bullet pics.
Good job !

Hey, I
almost resemble that remark !!!
I wish it were me taking a photo next to that thing. I
AM 5' 5" and 170lbs and that would be one hell of a picture - no one would believe it could be real.
Where did you get that boar?

Where did you hunt it ?
How did you find it? Did you track it? or was one of those "right moment, right place, right guy

(and of course right rifle & bullet

) ?

Don't know why every hunter doesn't hunt boar. It's more fun in my opinion than deer hunting, and there is no season and no limits. Year round fun!

WhitworthPlenty of folks have to travel to hunt. Obviously they aren't indigenous to every part of the US, but they are plentiful and if your state doesn't have 'em, then you just need to travel -- like many of us do. I don't have them too close to where I am either but that doesn't stop me. So, Mike, book a boar hunt!

Hell, I would have have to head North to your neck of the woods for Grizzly!

Thanks for all the comments guys. There's so many let's start with the load. It was the 900gr Woddleigh @ 2100 fps. He dropped at the shot. As Trophyhunter5000 says, I do think it failed somewhat as it failed to penetrate fully. While it did tremendous damage, it should have @ OVER 8K FT LBS. It is apparent this bullet can't hold up to these speeds on tough game. I will experiment with Kodiaks and the AHR mono x- type as I think they would fully penetrate. As to how far he went after the shot--again, straight down flat. So you could say it performed perfect. But I want full penetration on tough stuff in case you need to track. The entrance wound was caliber size but bled very little. Again, an exit would have been better if tracking was necessary.
This guy was taken at Bear Mountain in the U P of Michigan.
I did not recover the bullet as the skinning was done by their butcher and as it was well below zero, I let him do his job :-)

Whitworth600, do you have a web address for the place you hunted?
Great job!

jeffeossoI've got a buddy that ph'ed with a 577 ne ..
at 2065 he nearly never recovered a woodleigh bullet, no matter what he hit, other than ele and hippo
we had TWO of the same bullets, at 2350, openup huge and not penetrate an eland ...awesome damage, but a solid or x would (and did) go through....
fell to the shot is awesome
