Barrel length for .376 Steyr?? Login/Join

Guys,

Am putting together a .376 Steyr on a reheat treated 1909 Argentine Mauser action. Already have an M70 SS Classic in .375 H&H as well as 9,3x62s and two .416s. The 9,3x62s have 24" barrels as barrel length impacts performance in that caliber. The M70 has a 24" barrel. (It is one of those heavier barrels that works well off of sticks but not so well in the woods.) The .376/.416 Steyr Improved has a 22" barrel and the .416 Rigby has a 25" barrel.

I suspect the .376 will be used for piggies, plains game, and bear. My temptation is to go with a 22" barrel on it as that is a very handy length for me. I would expect it beat 9,3x62 performance by about 100 fps or more even with the shorter barrel.

Any thoughts? (Other than "Why not a .375 Ruger?" Barrel is already chambered. If I can't get it to shoot I may go with the .375 Ruger.)

Boom Stick,

I think my hopes are fairly rational. I'm thinkin' 225s at 2750 (max seems to be abt 2900 w H335 from a 24" tube) for piggies and 260-270 at 2450 to 2500 fps (which is less than 100 fps faster than the 9,3x62).

I get 2604 fps from the .375 H&H with 300 gr TSXs for the 24" M70 ... and don't expect to get that with 270s from the .376 Steyr.

I thought the factory 376 Steyr came with a 20". I would go with the 22" without a second thought.

Baised on the other rifles you have I would make this one 20".

I have Blaser Tracker bbls [19 3/4"] in 308 and 375 H&H. They are my 2 most favorite hunting bolt rifle barrels.

I did one on a VZ-24, went with a 22" in tube 300g over Varget = 2425fps as I recall. thumb

I would go with your plan of 22. I get 2800 fps with Barnes 235 grn TSXs over 67.2 grns of H4895 out of a 22 inch tube in my 376 steyr

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Hi Mike,

Have you done any work with a 270gr. bullet? If so, what do you get for velocity in your barrel? I just picked-up a Steyr Pro-Hunter Mountain in .376 and can't find much data. My first posting has 290+ hits and no reply. Is that a record? I'd appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.

Hi Joe,

Haven't shot the rifle yet ... as it is still a pile of pieces. Is kind of an "after the season" project. Thought I'd do more of it this time ... rust blue, custom scope bases, Timney trigger, FN left side safety and shroud.

Will let you know what I get as time goes on.
