lets say we take a .425 Express and load it with 400gr bullets at 2125fs.

are there any bullets that is tough enough for elephants at point blank range, but soft enough to give reliable expansion at 1600fs?
(on animals such as moose, bear and the bigger plainsgame)

Solid/soft combination, or just a soft for both situations?
Cheers...

good point...
do you use soft points on elephant?
(i don't own this rifle, i'm just trying to find out if a .425 could suit me)

i mean a soft point that you would use for big five at really close ranges(buffalo etc), and a FMJ loaded to the same POI

i have looked on woodleighs, but on their website they recommend impact velocity of 1900-2400fs,
i'm looking for a 1600-2150fs bullet

Northfork bullets give reliable expansion over a wide range of velocities.

Woodleighs Weldcores are always a good choice.

You should tailor your bullets for each type of hunting that you do!

isn't north fork tougher than woodleigh?

my intention was to give them more range.
400gr woodleighs at 2125fs is a 220meter cartridge(by my standards)
but the bullet only expands out to 90meter.

oh never mind, seems like a .375 is the way to go.

No, woodleighs are a "harder" bullet than North Fork bullets.
Please consult the North Fork site. They have an example of a 380 grain .423 impacting at 1800 and 2000 FPS.

I use Woodleigh soft's and solid's at a MV of 2220fps with my 425WR.

On my recent Safari I brought only 8 softs and around 20 solids, as the solids will work on most game such as Elephant down to the smallest Antelope.

I don't know if I would say "harder" but different. The Woodleigh will expand quite well @ 2200fps & peels back nicely. The NF will expand equally well, but the faster you dirve it the deeper it will go as the nose folds down the shank. Either bullet will work, as would the Swift. The new Hornady also looks really good for a deep penetrator. LEFT IS FROM WETPACK, RIGHT IS FROM BUFFALO.

LEFT/NF, MIDDLE/WOODLEIGH, RIGHT/HAWK, all at 2150fps impact vel. in wetpack.
