Hi folks,

I'm thinking of getting myself a 404 Jeffery for all the best reasons (I want to and I can). The problem is finding one in Canada. For the same time and money it would take to get a CS 550 into Canada, I could have a rifle built. What would be your reccomendation for an action to build the rifle around?

you can't build one cheaper than CZ... sorry...

and if you did, it would only hold 2 down, unless you spend 500-750 more for custom bottom metal and stockpattern

in USD
550 CZ is what, 1500 bucks?

building the EASIEST one, on a win model 70 in .300 rum

600 - action
200 - barrel
200 - sights
200 (too low) stock blank
200 - chamber and headspace
200 - polish, blue, misc gunsmithing
$300 - cheapest possible stock turning and checkering

that's 1900 bucks... and you've got a fair stock... for 1900 bucks, you can get a great wood upgrade and have CZ bedded and crossbolt it

jeffe,

That is what I originally had in mind, but things aren't that simple on this side of the border, at least for that particular rifle. Through my favourite gun shop, I got a cost estimate from the Canadian distributor for CZ (London Arms)on a CS 550 in 404J, ~$2800 CDN! (~US $2400) For that price I could buy a new CZ and have it rechambered & rebarrelled with cash left over. London Arms didn't have any in stock and would have to import one from the US (6-8 months). There is a rumour that one of the big chains (Wholesale Sports) has signed a deal with CZ to be their Canadian distributor, cutting the current one out of the picture. Maybe this has something to do with the high price estimate, he didn't want the hastle when he was soon to be out of the picture.

I'll keep my eyes open at the local gun show in a couple weeks. Maybe I can pick up a .300 RUM.

Thanks,
Dean

I do not know anything about cross border shipping of firearms but it may be worth your while to give CZ in the US a call.

I thought CZ customs could be ordered directly from CZ, if that's the case may be CZ can handle the shipment for you to your dealer????

Good thought, I didn't know about the possiblity of ordering directly from CZ. The guys at the shop were just going through the normal channels.

Washington State U.S.A. www.rifleactions.com WFF HEIN.

Great value for the money spent, action alone $1950-, Bbl/act $2300-, whole rifle $2700-, they build actions right there from scratch.

5 rounds total, 4 plus 1. I have a 450 DAKOTA calibered rifle from them.

What about Montana Rifle Co.?

Other than open the bolt face a bit I don't think Tip Burns has had to do anything to the Long Action for my 404 Jeffery projects.
Montana now makes a .423 barrel.

Just got off the phone with Jon at MRC.
Chrome Moly barreled action 404 Jeffery in the white, $806, Blued $926.

I'd call that reasonable!

So, I just got off the phone with MRC and there is no problem getting one of their products across the border. They are back ordered and a 16 wk delivery time was estimated. So far, I'm impressed with the action, but I did a quick search on old AR threads and came up with some concerns people had with the action when applied to a 404J. The first was feeding and the second was magazine capacity. The salesman I spoke to at MRC wasn't sure but guessed a Montana 1999 would hold 3 down and 1 up. A number of posters on AR thought 2 down and 1 up. Anyone have some experience with either of these questions?

Thanks,
Dean

P.S. I didn't think to ask when the PH action might come out. Anyone know?
