I think you meant Rich, rather than Jeffe, as I haven't been to Vietnam, etc ...

on the "mundane", didn't mean that negative .. meant that its a GREAT round, and seen around the world .. but I have never seen it in walmart .. so ammo availiblity is probably a red herring

John
it CAN chamber a 404, just put the second one in the mag .. like a 458 winmag having a lott chamber .. and you can do a 404 on a standard ruger.. can do a 458 lott on one, too ... in fact, a poster here has one.

the rsm and the 404 would be a weight issue .. to me .. WHY? ruger's external profile of the barrel is the same in each generation of rsms

Dear Jeff:

This prickly discussion on the Ruger cartridges is providing Ruger and Hornady with some fantastic free advertising.

That's cool, because it will probably lower the price of 375 and 416 Ruger components for my use.

Sincerely,

Chris Bemis

Chris,
the 375 proved to me that I was foresighted to NOT make the 375 AR .. I love the ruger cart ... the 416 obviated any need for my 416 .. but, you know what, my round shoots great and fills the same niche .. as does the taylor and the BM and the mann .. they are all GREAT

You see, i am PERSONALLY impacted by the 416 Ruger .. it doesn't negate the validity of my work, but it does remove a large motivator for someone making a 416 AR, when the 416 ruger is factory ..

DId ya'll see that? I, of all the people in this discussion of the merits of a duplicate round, am actually IMPACTED by the 416 ruger

and I applaud Steve Hornady and Ruger for bringing this excellent choice to the market. Even though it is determental to my PERSONAL work, it is an excellent round, and I think everyone should own one.

When people ask me about the 416 AR, I point them to the 416 ruger .. as it makes better sense to use the far more common factory .. then again, I also ask people to consider the lott when they want a .458 ... most hear what I say, and do the AccRel anyway!

jeffe

Just read this whole thread. It was a lot of fun, and took me back through fond memories of the 375 Ruger threads from 2006/7. Good times and some good laughs.

I see Rich has added his cape buffalo experience to his arguement. Apparently that means more today than it did a couple years back. Smiler ps: I've still shot 3x as many as you. Wink Razzer

Loved the stuff about losing weight rather than buying lighter, more compact rifles (if it suits your taste). I wholeheartedly agree, and thats why I feel air-conditioning sucks wind compared to a cracked window. A/C is just an advertising ploy to appeal to fat, lazy girlie men! Comfort is for pansies, and everyone knows it.

Thanks for the chuckles gents. thumb Wish I was still able to spend as much time here, so I'd miss out on this stuff less.

Cheers
Canuck

Dear Duggaboye:

Actually, I spent a lot of time researching the 256, 35 and 40 Newton cartridges with one of the brethren here on the AR Forum.

I was well on my way, and then Ruger/Hornady came out with the 375 Ruger, and we were betting on the 416 Ruger soon thereafter.

I made some probing telephone calls to Hornady two years ago, and that's all I will say.

So, let's see, excellent factory brass, factory reamers (I have the 416 PTG reamer) and Redding factory reloading dies, well, there wasn't much left to decide.

Now, if I came across an original 40 Newton rifle, then everything would change.

Sincerely,

Chris Bemis

Having owned originals in 22, 256, 276 and 30, I concur , a 40 would be a dandy.

Have sold all but the 256 now, streamlining is at times a terrible thing.

I toyed with the .40 concept also, having built wildcats in the past, but as I age, laziness and practicality seem to get the better of me, since I have other 40's in the stable already.
