so what has been done with the hairbrain project of the decade? Any idea when metal work will be required? I know a million .395 wildcats have been talked about, but isn't the main one still being done on the '06 case?

Tthanks

i would like to see the 395 bs happen (395 on the ruger case) it can happen if the pledged work comes together. i have money issues right now (i am working on comming up with $10,000 for income taxes and property taxes) but i can get at $100 right now to make it happen. others have pledged funds, parts and smithing. if i remember corectly the barrels are about $250 for a stainless. the issue is the benafactors agreeing on who gets it or what charity the funds would go to if it were auctioned off here. so if we get another $150 we can put in the order for the barrel. i will let others here post to see who wants to help it happen or post ideas to make it happen. if we work together we can get this thing to go boom in probably 3 months!

1)who would like to be the guy to hold the funds?
2)what charity can funds go to or who would get it? the best thing is the charity auction imho so there is no fear of impropriety.
3)post here what you are willing to do or any ideas to make this happen.

much thanks to gerard and rip for whom without them this would be just another idea and the others who have pledged or supported the idea

thanks! wave

boom stick,
If you are on the hook for 10K quarterly you are doing great! Order that barrel! Wink

$180 for 4140 chrome-moly.
$280 for stainless.

Seriously,
It is a bit premature to expect much interest in "our idea." We will build it, and they will come.

The surly comments from Marc must come from his confusion over the "forty ought seven" which is actually the .395 Tatanka, based on a .416 Rigby with 20-degree shoulder (40 caliber of 2007, looks like an overgrown .30-06).

Or he is just trolling. troll

Maybe he is secretly lusting for a .395/.30-06 AI himself? You know, a Freudian slip of sorts?

I would think twice about offering to him the honor of creating a .395 rifle for you!

Not a bad idea though, the .395 Whelen AI?
Or what did you call yours? .395 American? thumb

I have posted AccuLoad III predictions for the .395 Ruger, .395 GSC, 398 Lapua, and .395 Tatanka. Here it is for the .395 American:

The .400 Whelen is 78.6 grains water gross.
.395 American = 77.0 grains water gross (would be a conservative estimate).
1.340" long .395/340gr GSC FN bullet
2.490" long case
26" barrel (because that's what the other .395's were calculated with, to be consistent in comparison)

H4895 54.6 grains ... 51,500 psi ... 2260 fps ... 3860 ft-lbs

H4895 60.6 grains ... 62,500 psi ... 2375 fps ... 4260 ft-lbs

That is as much KE as a .375 H&H.

Thermodynamic efficiency of the max load is 37.2% which is outstanding!

This is the .395 efficiency champ. I'll have to go add those numbers to the other thread. thumb

Better shoulder and better S.D. for the level of energy delivered than a .400 Whelen.

Obviously another superior cartridge with a niche to fill: .395 American

salute

the 395 AMERICAN (all caps to imply saying it with pride like john wayne did)

great info rip on the 395 AMERICAN!

it will be interesting to calculate recoil of both in the same weight rifle and what weight rifle in 395 would duplicate that of a std h+h

that is a great idea...calculate the efficiency in all std and improved cases.

so the 395 AMERICAN is reigning champ in that catagory.

switch barrel in 30-06 and 395 AMERICAN

p.s. the improved 10x66 brass aka 9,9x66 for ease of headstamp will give 83 grains of powder room so figure 340@ 2400 Eeker

the 395 AMERICAN will look like a 411 hawk...and if made similar would have 82 grains of capacity so rip...you might need to tweak the #s a tad

boom stick,
The numbers in comparison for 82.0 grains of water gross instead of 77.0, everything else constant for the .395 AMERICAN:

Incidentally, the fastest load is now with IMR-4895:

IMR-4895
340-grain GSC FN

57.1 grains ... 51,800 psi ... 2295 fps ... 4145 ft-lbs ... 34.8% thermodynamic efficiency

63.4 grains ... 62,500 psi ... 2415 fps ... 4400 ft-lbs ... 36.6% thermodynamic efficiency

So, the .395 AMERICAN is a better killer than a .375 H&H. That is plenty good from a 30-06 case. thumb

and an extra down in the mag...

the ruger version will be easier and cheaper to do but the potential on the 06 case is way cool.
